Convincing Win Over Merced Earns Saturday Split

CSUMB sweeps Bobcats, falls to No. 9 Neb. Kearney

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball picked up its first win of the season in convincing fashion Saturday, closing the 2024 Otter Classic with a 25–14, 25–14, 25–17 over CCAA-bound UC Merced in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB hit a healthy .340 in the win over Merced, its highest team attack percentage since hitting .371 win a sweep of Dominican at the 2022 Otter Classic.

The Otter middles led the way with Mikayla Nolte (Long Beach Wilson HS) and Malia Thorne (Newport Harbor HS) combining to hit .667. Nolte went 8–0–10 (.800) while Thorne went 5–1–8 (.500).

Sophomore opposite Abby Witzansky (West Torrance HS) finished a solid first weekend as a starter by putting down eight kills against no errors. Fellow South Bay product Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS) paced the offense with 10 kills.

The defensive star for the Otters was Fresno City College transfer libero Mia Dilley (Clovis East HS), who collected 52 digs in four matches to earn a spot on the Otter Classic all-tournament team. She finished Saturday's play with 32 digs, including 15 in the sweep of Merced.

CSUMB's day began with a tough 25–16, 25–8, 25–15 result against preseason No. 9 ranked Nebraska Kearney. The Lopers hit .324 or better in all three sets while stifling the Otter attack with a strong defensive presence both at the net and in the back row.

Peterson led the offense with seven kills while Nolte added six. Dilley led the defense with a match-high 17 digs.

The Otters hit the road next week to play in the San Marcos Classic Sept. 13–14 at Cal State San Marcos. CSUMB will play Westmont College and Western Oregon on the 13th and Azusa Pacific on the 14th. They return home to host Stanislaus State in their CCAA opener on Sept. 20.
