Otters Drop Pair of 4-Setters

CSUMB falls 3-1 to Westmont, Western Oregon

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay opened play at the San Marcos Classic Volleyball Tournament with a pair of tough 4-set losses to Westmont College and Western Oregon Friday afternoon in the Cal State San Marcos Sports Center.

Westmont opened the tournament by taking a 25–17, 20–25, 28–26, 25–16 win in the morning. Western Oregon held on for a 25–22, 25–21, 20–25, 25–21 win in the late afternoon.

Sophomore outside hitter Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS) led CSUMB with 16 kills for the day, including a career-high 12 versus Western Oregon. Sophomore middle blocker Malia Thorne (Newport Harbor HS) posted a team-leading 21 points, including a career-high six blocks in the Westmont match. Junior libero Mia Dilley (Clovis East HS/Fresno CC) led the backline with 32 digs, including a season-high 17 against WOU.

The Otters appeared poise to start the tournament in the win column when they forged a 1–1 tie before earning three consecutive set point opportunities with a chance to take a 2–1 lead in the third. But a pair of service errors took away CSUMB's momentum and the Warriors converted the only chance they would need to finish the set.

CSUMB fell behind 9–1 to start the fourth and never caught up.

WOU took a pair of tight affairs to jump to an early lead in the late match. A Peterson kill broke a 15–15 tie in the third and kept the Otters in the match. The fourth set remained tight until late, when the Wolves scored six of the final eight points to break a 19–19 tie and secure the match.

The Otters will close tournament play Saturday against PacWest Conference foe Azusa Pacific, with first serve scheduled ofr 3 p.m.
