Azusa Rallies For 4-Set Win

Dilley, Thorne named to all-tournament team

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay got off to a quick start, but Azusa Pacific rallied past that to earn a 21–25, 25–9, 25–17, 25–17 win as part of the San Marcos Classic Saturday in the CSUSM Sports Center.

Junior libero Mia Dilley (Clovis East HS/Fresno CC) continued the strong start to her Otter career with a match-high 21 digs. Brenna Duggan, Malia Peterson and Abby Witzansky added nine kills apiece. Middle blockers Lilly Bandle, Mikayla Nolte and Malia Thorne each chipped in a solo block.

Dilley and Thorne were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts over the weekend.

The Otters were on their way to their first victory of the weekend after hitting .341 (16––44) in a strong first set win. But the Cougars came out for set two with their guns blazing, racing to a 9–0 to put it on ice quickly.

A competitive third set saw APU break a 14–14 tie by scoring 11 of the final 14 points for the win. The Cougars eased away gradually throughout the final set to secure the win.

CSUMB returns home to open CCAA play Friday and Saturday when Stanislaus State (Fri.) and Chico State (Sat.) visit The Kelp Bed for a pair of 5 p.m. matches.
