Otters Drop Two To Open Season

CSUMB falls in four sets to Menlo, Westmont

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team dropped a pair of tough 4-setters to open its 2024 campaign Friday at the Otter Classic Tournament in The Kelp Bed. Menlo College took an afternoon decision, 25–18, 22–25, 25–14, 25–23 before Westmont College claimed an evening affair, 16–25, 25–19, 25–23, 25–22.

Sophomore opposite Abby Witzansky (West Torrance HS) led the offense with a pair of career highs. She posted 10 kills in the early match against Menlo and followed that with a match-high 12 against Westmont. Fellow sophomore Malia Thorne (Newport Harbor HS) equalled Witzansky with a career-high 12 kills against Westmont.

Both matches appeared to be heading for five games until the visitors rallied late in the fourth set. The Otters raced to a 6–1 lead against the Menlo in Set 4 and never trailed until the Oaks pulled ahead at 22–21. Menlo broke a 23–23 tie with the final two points to seal the win.

Against Westmont, the Otters controlled the fourth set and never trailed until the Warriors scored the final five points to turn a 22–20 deficit into the winning margin.

The Otters close play at the Otter Classic with a pair of matches Saturday. They tackle No. 9 ranked Nebraska Kearney at 2 p.m. before closing tournament play against soon-to-be CCAA rival UC Merced at 6 p.m.
