No. 21 San Bernardino Survives Otter Scare

Wahl double-double, seven Bandle blocks lead to near upset

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — A Jackie Wahl (Palm Desert HS) double-double and a career-high seven blocks from sophomore Lilly Bandle (Jackson, Wisc./West Bend East HS) brought Cal State Monterey Bay ever so close to an upset before No. 21 Cal State San Bernardino held on for a 2516, 25–23, 24–26, 25–21 win Saturday night in Coussoulis Arena.

Wahl finished with her second double-double in three matches, leading the Otters with 15 kills and 10 digs. Bandle's seven blocks (1 solo, 6 assists) were the most by an Otter this season.

The match turned in a tight second set in which CSUMB rallied from 19–16 down to take a 22–20 lead. But the Coyotes rallied late, scoring the final two points to break a 23–23 tie.

The third set was just as tight, only this time the Otter forced San Bernardino to blink. Tied at 24–24, Wahl earned the Otters a set point which Bandle and freshman setter Ruby Ennis (Lakeside/El Capitan HS) finished with a block to extend the match.

CSUMB rallied back from an earliy deficit to make the fourth set interesting, but San Bernardino held on at the end to preserve the victory.

The Otters return home for a pair of CCAA matches next weekend, starting with a meeting with defending NCAA champion Cal State L.A. Friday at 5 p.m.
