Otters Just Miss Toppling Defending Champs

Defending NCAA champ L.A. rallies from 0-2 down to win in five

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay just missed stunning the defending NCAA champions before Cal State L.A. rallied to take a 23–25, 21–25, 25–21, 25–15, 15–7 win Friday night in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB got a team season-high six aces from freshman setter Ruby Ennis (Lakeside/El Capitan HS), 13 kills from senior Jackie Wahl (Palm Desert HS) and a career-high 10 from sophomore Brenna Duggan (Clayton Valley Charter HS). But when Emily Elliott, the MVP of the 2023 NCAA Championship Tournament, decided to take over by finishing with 29 kills and four aces, fortunate turned against the Otters.

Things looked bright for CSUMB early when it rallied from 18–14 down in the first to forge a 20–20 tie. The teams traded side outs until a Wahl kill gave the Otters set point and sophomore Jenna Kraft (Rocklin/Whitney HS) served out the set for the early Otter lead.

The Otters jumped ahead early in set two, held off a brief L.A. rally, then eased away late to seemingly take control up 2–0. That's when Elliott rose up, pounding 20 kills against just two errors over the final three sets to lead the Golden Eagle comeback.

L.A. raced to big leads early in the third and fourth sets, although the Otters rallied from nine points down to make it 23–20 in the third before the Golden Eagles pulled out the win. CSUMB took a 5–4 lead to open the fifth set before a 9–1 L.A. run put the match on ice.
 

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… a Samarah DaCoud kill capped a 9–1 run in the fifth set that gave L.A. an insurmountable 13–6 lead.

SHE'S ACES… Freshman setter Ruby Ennis nearly set the CSUMB record for aces in a 5-set match, finishing with six Friday against Cal State L.A. The last person to serve as many aces in a 5-setter was Ashlynne Armstrong when to broke Paige Burrell's record with seven aces against Chico State on Oct. 5, 2018.

THIS TIME, ENNIS CATCHES ARMSTRONG… Although she fell one short of Armstrong's aces record, with 27 assists Friday versus Cal State L.A. Ruby Ennis moved into a tie with Armstrong for 17th place on the Otter career assist list with 281. She needs 19 more to become the 16th player in Otter history to record 300 assists.

DUGGAN IS A HIT… Sophomore outside hitter Brenna Duggan matched her season and career highs with 10 kills Friday night against Cal State L.A. She also had 10 kills two weeks back against Stanislaus State.

MOVIN' ON UP… Jackie Wahl climbed several rungs on the Otter career kills ladder with 13 Friday against Cal State L.A. She moved from No. 25 all the way to a tie for No. 22 (with Alisha Thomas) at 373 kills. She needs 35 more kills to earn a spot in the Otter Top 20.
