Otters Roar Back To Tame Toros In Four

Wahl’s 21 kills, Ennis’s 51 assists lead comeback victory

Story Links

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay got off to a slow start before roaring back to tame visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills for a 22–25, 25–22, 25–22, 25–21 victory Saturday night in The Kelp Bed.

Senior outside hitter Jackie Wahl (Palm Desert HS) continued her strong run of play by slamming a career-high 21 kills as part of CSUMB's team season-high 63 kills. Wahl added a season-high 18 digs for her  third consecutive double-double, but she was far from the only Otter to enjoy a big night Saturday.

Freshman setter Ruby Ennis (Lakeside/El Capitan HS) became just the third Otter to record more than 50 assists in a 4-set match, finishing with a season-high 51. She added 17 digs to complete her fourth double-double. Malia Thorne (Newport Harbor HS) and Abby Witzansky (West Torrance HS) both just missed their Otter records with 11 kills apiece.

CSUMB shaved four points off a 23–18 deficit in the first set, but couldn't complete the comeback as Dominguez Hills held on to take the opening frame. When the Toros jumped to an 11–5 lead to open the second, it appeared the Otters might be in trouble.

But Wahl ended five of the next 20 rallies with kills to help the Otters pulled ahead 20–17. A pair of Ennis blocks and a Brenna Duggan (Clayton Valley Charter HS) kill quelled a Toro rally and evened the match.

In fact, Wahl had taken over by that point, putting down 17 of her 21 kills over the final three sets.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHENMalia Thorne registered kills 10 and 11 on the night to end the final Toro rally and close out the match.

WAHL JOINS THE 20-KILL CLUB… Jackie Wahl became the ninth Otter to register more than 20 kills in a 4-set match with her 21-kill effort in Saturday's win over Cal State Dominguez Hills. The last Otter to do it was Jenna Tobin, who tied the Otter record with 27 kills in a win over Hawaii-Hilo on Sept. 13, 2019.

WAHL NEARS 400 KILLS… With her 21 kills in Saturday's win over Cal State Dominguez Hills, Jackie Wahl moved to within six of 400 career kills. She is looking to become the 22nd Otter to reach that mark.

OTTER HITTERS REACH THE TOP 10… Led by Jackie Wahl's big night, Cal State Monterey Bay recorded 63 kills in Saturday's win over Cal State Dominguez Hills. That mark ranks No. 6 in the Otter record book. They haven't posted more in a 4-set match since they went for 64 against Humboldt State in 2013.

SETTING THE STANDARD… Ruby Ennis joined Kelsey Johnston and Sophie Torres as the only Otter setters to record more than 50 assists in a 4-set match with her 51 in Saturday's win over Cal State Dominguez Hills.

OTTERS JUST MISS ASSIST RECORD… Led by the big night from Ruby Ennis, the Otters just missed the school record for assists in a 4-set match by recording 62 Saturday versus Cal State Dominguez Hills. The school record of 63 came against (then) Humboldt State on Sept. 22, 2007.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jackie Wahl 21.5; KILLS: Jackie Wahl 21; BLOCKS: Malia Thorne 5; ACES: Ruby Ennis 3; DIGS: Jackie Wahl 18.

THE LAST WORD… "We've been working for this feeling. Through some tough moments and results, we have stayed focused and diligent in our pursuit. I am so proud of our defensive effort and net play. Ruby (Ennis) ran a phenomenal offense and Jackie (Wahl) owned the floor, from her defensive coverage to her strong attacks. I also want to thank Dr. Sarah Powell for meeting with the team today at a moment's notice to remind us, 'Why Not Us?'" — CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for their next three matches, beginning with a trip south to take on Cal State San Marcos Friday (Oct. 11). First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
