Epic Comeback Leads Otters Over San Marcos

Jackie Wahl goes for 21 kills again in 5-set thriller

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay earned its second consecutive victory with an epic comeback to take down Cal State San Marcos 26–24, 23–25, 16–25, 25–18, 15–13 Friday night in the CSUSM Sports Center.

The comeback actually was a two part affair. The Otters had to rally back from two sets to one down and then had to rally again from 12–7 down in the fifth set.

Senior outside hitter Jackie Wahl (Palm Desert HS) led the CSUMB attack with her second consecutive 21-kill performance. Opposite Kennedy Adams (Temecula HS) and middle blocker Mikayla Nolte (Long Beach Wilson HS) each added career highs of 14 kills.

Wahl led three Otter backline defenders in double figures with a season-high 19 digs. Nolte led at the net with a season-high six blocks. Freshman setter Ruby Ennis (Lakeside/El Capitan HS) added a double-double with 46 assists and 17 digs.

After the Otters rallied to tie the match with a comfortable fourth set victory, San Marcos appeared to regain its footing by racing to leads of 5–1 10–5 to start the fifth. With her Otters still trailing 12–7 and time running out, Head Coach Courtney Materazzi called the timeout that changed the flow of the match.

Wahl came out of the timeout with a kill to start the comeback. By the time she added her 19th kill of the night, CSUMB had trimmed the deficit to 12–11.

A kill from Jessica Thomas stemmed the tide, but only momentarily. An Adams kill and two more from Wahl got the Otters to match point, where a Cougar error following a long rally gave CSUMB the win.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… the Otters survived a long rally on match point to cap an 8–1 finishing run.

WAHL HITS BLACKJACK AGAIN… After reaching the 20-kill level for the first time as an Otter with 21 in last Saturday's win over Cal State Dominguez Hills, Jackie Wahl hit blackjack again with 21 more in Friday's win at Cal State San Marcos.

THE 20–20 CLUB… With 21 kills in Friday's win at Cal State San Marcos, Jackie Wahl became the first Otter to go for more than 20 kills in consecutive matches since Otter Hall of Famer Julia Ashen went for 24 against East Bay and 30 against Cal State L.A. Oct. 1–4, 2013.

NOLTE JOINS ANOTHER TOP 10… Already ranked amongst the Otter Top 10 for block solos (8th) and total blocks (10th) entering the match, Mikayla Nolte cracked the Top 10 for block assists Friday night when her six assists moved her into a tie for 10th with Jessica Malcolm at 141. If you're keeping track at home, she also moved up to No. 8 in total blocks with 181.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jackie Wahl 22.0; KILLS: Jackie Wahl 21; BLOCKS: Mikayla Nolte 6; ACES: Ruby Ennis 3; DIGS: Jackie Wahl 19.

THE LAST WORD… "What a resilient showing by the team in the fifth. We had moments and plays that could have shut us down mentally throughout the match and we refused to let that happen. So proud of Jack, Ken and Mik taking the lead this match and really having excellent performances." — CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their SoCal road swing by visiting No. 8 Cal Poly Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
