No. 8 Pomona Proves Its Mettle In Sweep

Peterson leads Otters with 9 kills, 11 digs

POMONA, Calif. — No. 8 ranked Cal Poly Pomona proved its national ranking was well deserved Saturday afternoon by earning a 25–15, 25–19, 25–20 win over Cal State Monterey Bay in Kellogg Arena.

Cal Poly's smothering defense held the Otters to a season-low .067 attack percentage. The Broncos' 12 blocks (3.0 bps) and 57 digs (19.0 dps) both were seasons bests for an Otter opponent.

The Otter offense started the day a bit handicapped as red-hot freshman setter Ruby Ennis (Lakeside/El Capitan HS) was unable to play. Junior Hannah Jo Castillon (Modesto/Central Catholic HS) made her return after missing the last six matches due to injury and ran a 5–1 for the first time this season.

Sophomore Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS) led the Otter offense with nine kills She also reached double-figure digs for the second time this season, leading the defense with 11.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… After a Jackie Wahl kill pulled the Otters to within 21–19 in the third set, a pair of Landon Allison-Bullock kills gave the Broncos some breathing room and they scored four of the final five points to end the match.

WAHL JOINS THE 400-KILL CLUB… Lost amidst the highlights of Friday's epic comeback win at Cal State San Marcos, Jackie Wahl became the 22nd player in Otter history to reach 400 career kills. Her six kills Saturday in Pomona brought her total to 421, good for No. 20 on the career kills list. She needs two to pass Lauren Reeves for No. 19 and 11 to pass Mollin Helfrich for No. 18.

NOLTE INCHES UP BLOCKS TOP 10 LISTS… With one block solo and one block assist Saturday in Pomona, Mikayla Nolte inched up one spot on those respective Otter career top 10 lists. She tied DJ Gresham-Ryder for No. 7 on the solos list with 41. She moved past Jessica Malcolm into sole possession of the No. 10 spot on the assist list with 142.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Malia Peterson 10.5; KILLS: Malia Peterson 9; BLOCKS: Kennedy Adams 3; ACES: Malia Peterson 1; DIGS: Malia Peterson 11.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will play Cal State East Bay twice during travel partner week in the CCAA. CSUMB heads to Hayward for a Thursday (Oct. 17) tilt with East Bay. The Pioneers will make the return trip to The Kelp Bed Saturday (Oct. 19). First serve both nights is scheduled for 5 p.m.
