Otters Survive Late Rally to Win Battle of the Bays

Jackie Wahl has 28 kills, Hannah Jo Castillon 27 digs in epic victory

HAYWARD, Calif. — A career night from senior Jackie Wahl (Palm Desert HS) helped Cal State Monterey Bay stave off a big Cal State East Bay rally for a 25–16, 26–24, 23–25, 14–25, 15–12 win Thursday night in Pioneer Gym.

Wahl put down a career-high 28 kills, the seventh most in CSUMB history, including kills on the final three Otter points to seal the victory. Her 28 kills are the most by an Otter since Jessica Malcolm recorded 29 against UC San Diego back in 2013.

Wahl claimed nearly half of CSUMB's 61 kills for the evening. Running a 5–1 for just the second time in her Otter career, junior setter Hannah Jo Castillon (Modesto/Central Catholic HS) set a career-high with 41 assists and added a career-high 27 digs. Castillon was one of five Otters to record double-digit digs as the team hit the century mark for digs at East Bay for the second consecutive season with 100.

CSUMB pulled away midway through the first set to jump to an early 1–0 lead. East Bay seemed poised to level the match, leading 18–10 in the second, when Wahl recorded two kills and Kennedy Adams (Temecula HS) had two aces in a 7–0 run to got the Otters back into the set.

The Pioneers clung stubbornly to their now slim advantage until two more Wahl kills put CSUMB on top 24–23. East Bay saved one set point, but two more Wahl kills—her eighth and ninth of the set—gave the Otters a commanding 2–0 lead in the match.

CSUMB rallied back from a 17–12 deficit in the third to force another deuce set but couldn't finish the match. East Bay then won the fourth going away to set up the winner-take-all fifth.

CSUMB scored the first three points and never trailed in the fifth. The Pioneers did close to within one at 12–11 before Wahl put the finishing touches on the third Otter win in their last four outings.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHENJackie Wahl recorded the final three Otter kills after East Bay had closed to within 12–11 in the fifth.

WAHL JOINS ELITE COMPANY… With her career-high 28 kills in Thursday's win at Cal State East Bay, became just the fourth player in Otter history to record 28 or more kills in a match. She joins Rheann Fall (who did it four times), Julia Ashen (twice) and Jessica Malcolm (once).

THE MULTIPLE 20–KILL CLUB… Jackie Wahl has recorded 20+ kills in three of her last four matches. She is the first Otter with three 20+ kill matches in a season since Jessica Malcolm did it five times in 2015.

CAN YOU DIG IT? The Otters hit the century mark for digs with an even 100 in Thursday's win at Cal State East Bay. It's the 13th time they've done it and the second consecutive trip to Pioneer Gym where they reached that milestone. They had 104 digs at East Bay almost one year ago to the day (Oct. 14, 2023).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jackie Wahl 28.5; KILLS: Jackie Wahl 28; BLOCKS: Malia Thorne 3; ACES: Kennedy Adams/Hannah Jo Castillon 2; DIGS: Hannah Jo Castillon 27.

THE LAST WORD… "Tonight we showed ourselves new possibilities and things we're capable of. Staying composed, having precise communication and believing in ourselves has been a huge focus the last few weeks. There were many times we could have put those ideals to the side and did not. Another stellar performance by Jackie and Hannah had the best defense on the floor this evening." — CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters and Pioneers will conclude their home-and-home series Saturday in The Kelp Bed. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
