Pioneers Get Battle of the Bays Revenge In Five

Wahl puts down 25 kills, but East Bay saves two match points to survive

SEASIDE, Calif. — Another huge night from senior Jackie Wahl (Palm Desert HS) wasn't quite enough to earn Cal State Monterey Bay a sweep of the annual Battle of the Bays. This time, Cal State East Bay survived a pair of match points to pull out a 25–23, 23–25, 25–21, 23–25, 19–17 marathon victory Saturday night in The Kelp Bed.

Two nights after going for a career-high 28 kills in CSUMB's win over the Pioneers in Hayward, Wahl put down a match-high 25 kills. She saved her biggest kills for the biggest moments, including three consecutive points in which she helped turn a 14–11 deficit in the fifth set into a pair of match points from the Otters.

With things knotted at 17–17, however, East Bay's Coco Ikpe put down a kill before going to the line to serve an ace on match point.

The match was every bit as close as the set scores would lead you to believe. CSUMB opened a 15–8 lead in the second set and East Bay a 16–10 lead in the third. Other than that, neither team led a set by more than four points all night.

In addition to Wahl, senior opposite Kennedy Adams (Temecula HS) recorded a career-high 16 kills. Sophomore Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS) matched her career high with 12 kills while sophomore Lilly Bandle (Jackson, Wisc./West Bend East HS) added a season-high 10.

Setter Hannah Jo Castillon (Modesto/Central Catholic HS) chipped in a career-high 48 assists and a team-best 22 digs.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… After East Bay saved a pair of match points of its own, Coco Ikpe took advantage of the Pioneers' fourth match point opportunity by serving an ace.

WAHL 20-20-20-20 VISION… With 25 kills Saturday against Cal State East Bay, Jackie Wahl now has recorded 20+ kills in four of her last five outings. The only other Otter to turn that trick was CSUMB Hall of Fame member Julia Ashen, who did it in 4-of-5 games twice during the 2013 season.

THE MULTIPLE 20–KILL CLUB… Jackie Wahl is now one of just four Otters ever to record 20+ kills four times in a single season, joining Julia Ashen (2013), Rheann Fall (2010–11) and Jessica Malcolm (2013–14).

MOVIN' ON UP… With 25 kills Saturday against Cal State East Bay, Jackie Wahl moved up to No. 17 on the Otter career kills list with 474. She needs 16 more to pass Chandler McKean for 16th place.

NOLTE ON THE BLOCKS… With a solo block Saturday against Cal State East Bay, Mikayla Nolte moved into a tie for the No. 7 spot on the career block solos list with 42. She tied Tiffaney Riggs (2008–11) and Aprile Smith (2002–03). She needs five more to pass Victory Clardy for the No. 4 spot.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jackie Wahl 26.0; KILLS: Jackie Wahl 25; BLOCKS: Kennedy Adams 3; ACES: Kennedy Adams 4; DIGS: Hannah Jo Castillon 22.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 3-match homestand Friday (Oct. 25) by hosting Cal Poly Humboldt. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
