Otters Beat Humboldt, Remain In Playoff Hunt

Wahl leads three Otter hitters in double figures with 14 kills

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay gave its playoff hopes a nice boost with a 25–18, 18–25, 25–23, 26–24 win over Cal Poly Humboldt Friday night in The Kelp Bed.

Both teams entered the match 3–7 in CCAA play. The Otter victory leaves them one game behind Sonoma State and Chico State for the sixth and final CCAA tournament bid. The Otters host Sonoma Saturday and travel to Chico the final weekend of the regular season.

Senior Jackie Wahl (Palm Desert HS) led three Otters in double figures with 14 kills. Senior opposite Kennedy Adams (Temecula HS) added 13 kills while sophomore outside Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS) matched her career high for the second consecutive match with 12 kills.

Sophomore Malia Thorne (Newport Harbor HS) put down a career-high four solo blocks to lead the net defense while Mia Dilley (Clovis East HS) anchored the back row with 15 digs.

CSUMB pulled away midway through the opening frame to take an early lead before Humboldt used a strong service game in the second set to even the match. Both sides held late leads in the third before a pair of Wahl kills and a Dilley ace got the Otters to set point.

The Lumberjacks rallied back from 23–19 down in the fourth, but a pair of Humboldt errors at 24–24 iced the win for the Otters

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… After her kill saved the first Otter match point, Awelina Fakalata made a pair of hitting errors to seal the win for CSUMB.

CHOPPING DOWN THE LUMBERJACKS… Friday's 25–18, 18–25, 25–23, 26–24 win over Cal Poly Humboldt was CSUMB's 23rd win all-time over the Lumberjacks (23–10). That is tied with Cal State Dominguez Hills for the most wins by CSUMB over any volleyball opponent.

ALL "FOUR" THE OTTERS… After dropping 10 consecutive matches that went four sets dating back to last season, the Otters won their second consecutive 4-setter Friday against Cal Poly Humboldt.

WAHL NEARING 500 KILLS… With 14 kills in Friday's win over Cal Poly Humboldt, Jackie Wahl brought her career total to 488. She needs 12 more to become the 16th player in Otter history to reach 500 kills.

ENNIS RETURNS, NEARS 400 ASSISTS… Freshman setter Ruby Ennis returned to action Friday after missing last weekend nursing an injury. She finished with 21 assists to bring her season total to 399. With her next dime, she will become the 22nd player in Otter history to record 400 assists in a season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jackie Wahl 14.5; KILLS: Jackie Wahl 14; BLOCKS: Malia Thorne 4; ACES: Kennedy Adams/Mia Dilley/Ruby Ennis/Rilee Graham 1; DIGS: Mia Dilley 15.

THE LAST WORD… "Our individual and team ownership continues to improve with each match. We've needed to improve our offensive numbers and are doing that — even with a different line up this evening. Jackie, Ken and Malia really held their own, with Lilly have a high kill percentage. Humboldt has one of the best outsides in conference and we stayed committed to slowing her down at the end of the match." — CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 3–match homestand by hosting Sonoma State Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
