Otters Can’t Sustain Hot Start, Fall To Sonoma

Jackie Wahl posts 12-kill, 13-dig double-double

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay got off to its hottest start since opening day 2023, but couldn't sustain the moment as visiting Sonoma State rallied for a 14–25, 25–17, 25–16, 25–17 win Saturday evening in The Kelp Bed.

The 14 points allowed by the Otters in the opening frame were the fewest by an opponent in a set this season. But Sonoma pulled away midway through each of the final three frames to remove any doubt from the outcome.

Jackie Wahl (Palm Desert HS) led CSUMB with a 12-kill, 13-dig double-double. Sophomore middle Lilly Bandle (Jackson, Wisc./West Bend East HS) added nine kills and a team-leading six blocks.

CSUMB hits the road for its next two matches. The Otters will look to sweep the season series from Cal State Dominguez Hills when they face the Toros in Carson on Nov. 1. They travel up the 405 to take on defending NCAA Division II champion Cal State L.A. the following night in Los Angeles.
