Story Links

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay rallied from an 0–2 deficit, but visiting Chico State pulled off the final rally to hold on for a 25–19, 25–20, 21–25, 25–20 win Saturday in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB got a career-high 19 kills from senior Jackie Wahl (Palm Desert HS), Mia Dilley's (Clovis East/Fresno CC) first collegiate double-double and 40 assists from freshman setter Ruby Ennis (Lakeside/El Capitan HS), but it proved to be just a skosh too little in this entertaining affair.

Chico started fast and kept the Otters at arm's length in winning the opening set. CSUMB led late in the second set before the Wildcats broke a 19–19 tie with a 5-point run to take control of the match.

The Otters turned the tables in set three, using a 9–1 run to turn a 15–12, deficit into a 21–16 lead that ultimately extended the match. A winner-take-all fifth set appeared almost certain after the Otters extended their lead in set four to 17–11. But the Wildcats had one last rally in their satchel, and 11 consecutive points later, they were on their way to victory.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… a Jesse Camarillo ace capped an 11–0 run that turned a 17–11 Otter lead into a 22–17 Chico advantage in the fourth set.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE TROUBLE… Junior libero Mia Dilley collected 16 digs and 12 assists to join Sam Chavez and Ashlynne Armstrong as the only libero's in Otter history to record a double-double. Chavez was the last one to do it, with 27 digs and 12 assists against Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 9, 2022.

NOLTE ON THE BLOCKS… No stuffs for senior middle blocker Mikayla Nolte Saturday versus No. 11 on the Otter career blocks list with 172. She'll enter the new week needing two more tie Amber Tygart (2014–17) for the No. 10 spot.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jackie Wahl 20.0.0; KILLS: Jackie Wahl 19; BLOCKS: Ruby Ennis 2; ACES: Ruby Ennis 2; DIGS: Mia Dilley 16.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for a pair of CCAA contests next week, starting Thursday (Sept. 26 at San Francisco State. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
