Otters Open CCAA Tournament With Walk-off Win

6-5 victory over San Francisco State is career win No. 400 for Walt White

POMONA, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay began defense of its California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament championship with a walk-off 6-5 victory over San Francisco State Thursday afternoon at Scolinos Field.

With the victory, CSUMB (33-17) advances to Friday's winner's bracket game against the winner of Thursday's late game between Cal State San Marcos and Cal Poly Pomona.

The win also marked career victory No. 400 for Head Coach Walt White. All 400 of those victories have come as the Otter skipper

Senior shortstop Nico Hartojo (Arvada, Colo./MPC) played the hero for the Otters, going 4-for-4, including the game-winning, walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth. Senior closer Ryan Io (Hollister/San Benito HS) struck out two in a perfect ninth inning for his third win of 2024.

CSUMB scored twice in the first inning, with a Hartojo single driving in the second run. Hartojo then led off the fourth inning with a double before scoring on a Max Farfan (Salinas HS) sac fly.

Jaden Sheppard's (Pleasanton/Amador Valley HS) no-doubt homer down the left field line increased the Otter lead to 4-2 in the fifth before the Gators scored three times in the top of the sixth to take their only lead of the game at 5-4. The Otters tied it with a ground out in the home half of the sixth to set up the fantastic finish.

A pair of walks and a 2-out single by Sergio Solis (Ceres/Central Valley HS) loaded the bases for Hartojo in the ninth. He chopped a 2-2 pitch deep into the hole at short and the Gators had no play as KW Quilici (Alameda HS) sauntered home from third with the game-winner.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Nico Hartojo single to deep shortstop to score KW Quilici with the game-winning run.

FOR (CCAA TOURNAMENT) OPENERS… The Otters 5-4 in CCAA Tournament openers with Thursday's 6-5 win over San Francisco State. They improved to 12-15 all-time in CCAA tournament play.

A SHEPPARD'S DOZEN… Jaden Sheppard hit his 12th home run of the season in Thursday's 6-5 win over San Francisco State. That ties Jason Ajamian for No. 6 on the Otters single season list. Next up are Kevin Davidson (2016), Hayden Duer (2016) and Drew Williams (2023), who each hit 13 in a season.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will play the winner of Thursday's late game between Cal State San Marcos and Cal Poly Pomona a winner's bracket game Friday at 3 p.m.
