Farfan’s Heroics Lead Otters To Historic Win At NCAA Super Regional

Max Farfan hits fifth HR of postseason in 9th inning of 10-5 win at Point Loma

SAN DIEGO — Second baseman Max Farfan (Salinas HS) played the hero once again for the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team, hitting an opposite field 2-run shot in the ninth inning to lead the Otters to a come-from-behind 10–5 win over top-seeded Point Loma Nazarene University in Game 1 of the NCAA Division II Super Regional at Carroll B. Land Stadium.

With the win, CSUMB (39–19) moves within one victory of a trip to Cary, N.C., the site of the Division II CWS. Point Loma (43–11–1) will need to beat CSUMB twice on Saturday to advance.

Farfan's home run, his fifth in NCAA Tournament play this season, gave the Otters a 6–5 lead. CSUMB then poured it on, tacking on four more runs to complete a 6-run ninth inning to secure the win.

The long ball was the order of the day for the CSUMB offense. Cole Murchison homered in the fourth inning to give the Otters a 2–0 lead. Jaden Sheppard (Amador Valley HS/Fresno State) added a 2-run shot in the sixth to answer a 4-run Point Loma fourth and tie the game at 4–4.

Point Loma catcher Tommy Molina broke the tie with a solo homer in the seventh inning, but all that did was set the stage for Farfan to do max Farfan things. Sergio Solis (Ceres/Central Valley HS) led off the ninth with a 5-pitch walk in front of Farfan, who greeted the All-American closer by driving a 1-1 pitch out to right center.

CSUMB got seven innings of 6-hit ball from starter Nate Rolicek (Gilbert, Ariz./Chandler HS). Junior closer Ryan Io (San Benito HS) pitched a scoreless eighth to improve to 6–0. Aiden Lee (Live Oak/Monte Vista Christian) fanned the final two batters to close the book on the Sea Lions.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Cole Murchison's 2-run single made it 10–5 Otters.

WHERE NO OTTER HAS GONE BEFORE… The Otters are now one game away from advancing to the NCAA Division II College World Series. They are the first Otter team sport to get within a game of the national championship tournament.

A RECORD-TYING WIN… Friday's victory was win No. 39 for the Otters (39–19) on the season, tying the school record for wins set in 2013, 2018 and 2023. CSUMB has won at least 30 games in eight of its 12 full seasons under Head Coach Walt White, including the last six in a row.

POSTSEASON HEROICS ARE NOTHING NEW TO THESE OTTERS… Tied or trailing in the final inning? That's just how these Otters like it. By scoring six runs in the ninth inning, the Otters won in their final at bats for the fifth time in nine postseason games this year. The Otters are out-scoring their opponents 21–2 in the ninth inning of 2024 postseason play.

DOUBLE THE FUN FOR ENGMAN… JJ Engman (Renton, Wash./O'Dea HS) extended his CSUMB record for doubles in a season by hitting his 24th in Friday's 10–5 win at Point Loma Nazarene.

SHEPPARD INCHES CLOSE TO HOME RUN MARK… Jaden Sheppard cracked his 15th home run of 2024 in Friday's 10–5 win at Point Loma Nazarene. He needs three more long balls to tie the CSUMB record of 18 set by Hayden Duer and Jacob Tonascia in 2018.

SHEPPARD UP TO FOURTH IN RBI… With three RBI in Friday's 10–5 win at Point Loma Nazarene Jaden Sheppard moved up to No. 4 on the CSUMB single season RBI list with 63. He needs two more to catch Jacob Tonascia (2018) for the No. 3 spot.

EXTRA BASE HITS… DOUBLES: JJ Engman (24); TRIPLES: None; HOME RUNS: Cole Murchison (5), Jaden Sheppard (15), Max Farfan (5).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will conclude NCAA Super Regional play Saturday at Point Loma Nazarene. The Otters need just one win to advance to the College World Series. Point Loma will have to beat the Otters twice to advance.

GO OTTERS!
