SAN DIEGO – The No. 17-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team saw its season come to an end in heartbreaking fashion on Championship Saturday of the NCAA West Super Regional. The Otters nearly clinched a berth to the College World Series in game one but fell in 13 innings, 10-8, and then dropped the winner-take-all contest, 7-1.
GAME ONE | PLNU 10 – CSUMB 8 (13 Innings)
Coming off a huge game one victory on Friday in the Super Regional opener, the Otters carried that momentum into the opening game on Saturday, coming out of the gates with four runs in the first inning.
CSUMB would enter the ninth with a two-run lead but gave up a two-run home run. The Otters had their chances in the bottom of the ninth and in each ensuing extra inning, loading the bases and putting the series-clinching run in scoring position each time.
Unfortunately, the run could not come across and Point Loma scored two runs in the 13
th to snatch the victory.
KW Quilici hit a two-run home run and
JJ Engman drove in three runs.
Sergio Solis posted a game-high four hits and
Nico Hartojo added three knocks.
Cole Murchison had two hits and drove in a pair, while
Max Farfan had two hits and an RBI.
GAME TWO | PNLU 7 – CSUMB 1
For the second straight game, the Otters would strike first, this time in the second inning when
Cole Murchison drilled a solo home run to right.
Host Point Loma would even the score in the bottom half and then ultimately end CSUMB's season with a six-run fourth.
Sea Lions starter Ray Cebulski went 8.0 innings and allowed the one run on six hits.
Chase Lindemann and Murchison paced the Otters with two hits apiece.
