GOODYEAR, Ariz. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's golf team finds itself in the hunt, seven strokes back in fifth place at the midway point of the Hot Dirt Shootout Friday at Estrella Mountain Ranch.

The Otters finished the opening round at 4-over 292, seven behind co-leaders Dallas Baptist and Colorado Christian (E). Texas–Permian Basin (+1) and Cal State San Bernardino (+2) account for the balance of the top five teams.

On the player leaderboard, junior Tommy Kimberling (Rancho Cucamonga/Los Osos HS) and freshman Tony Tao (Eastvale/Western Christian HS) find themselves tied for fifth place at 1–under 71. Tao is playing as an individual and does not count towards CSUMB's team score.

Chris Chomyn of Stanislaus State leads the way at 5–under.

In addition to Kimberling and Tao, Simon Björken (19th, +1), Wilhelm Berg von Linde and Will Musson (Clovis North HS) (T27th, +2) also find themselves in the top third of the 108–golfer field.
