HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team found themselves in a large halftime hole but built a furious comeback to push WWPA leader Cal State East Bay to the brink on Saturday. The Otters ultimately fell on the road, 14-9, at the Pioneer pool.
The Otters came out sluggish and entered the intermission down 9-1, only scoring in the first quarter.
CSUMB came alive in the second half and scored five times and then added three more in the fourth quarter to try and climb back into the game.
Kaya Eaton led the Otter attack with three goals and
Allyson Ainsworth found the back of the cage twice as
Autumn Day and
Stella Martin also tallied three points on an afternoon that saw a 30-minute weather delay.
In the cage for the Otters,
Grace Mensing not only made nine saves but was an important part of the offense as she scored a goal, tallied an assist and was credited with four steals.
CSUMB will return to the Otter Tank on Saturday, April 6, to host Fresno Pacific. First sprint is scheduled for 1 p.m.
