SEASIDE, Calif. – The No. 20-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team swept its doubleheader against Stanislaus State on Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex. The Otters seized game one, 12-1, and then took the series victory by winning the nightcap, 10-6.
The sweep improves the Otters to 16-7 overall and 12-3 in CCAA play.
GAME 1 | CSUMB 12 – STAN 1
The Otters opened the doubleheader with a 12-1 victory. The bats stayed hot as CSUMB scored 12 runs on 12 hits.
Nico Hartojo went 3-for-3 with four RBI and a two-run home run, while
JJ Engman batted 3-for-5, scored three runs and smacked a solo shot.
Cole Murchison added two hits and three RBI.
Right-hander
Aidan Lee (2-0) earned the win, allowing one run on two hits, while striking out nine in six innings. The Otter bullpen of
Anthony Gniady and
Matt Campo combined for three innings of hitless relief.
Like the series opener, the Otters continued to be hot out of the gate as CSUMB scored eight runs on the strength of three home runs in the first three innings, including a four-spot in the opening frame.
Engman and Miguel went back-to-back in the second inning and Hartojo drilled his first home run of the season for a two-run shot in the third to fuel the early power surge.
Hartojo extended the CSUMB lead to 9-0, when he drove in
KW Quilici in the fifth inning for his fourth RBI of the game.
The floodgates opened for the final time in the eighth inning as the Otters plated three runs to move the score to 12-1.
GAME 2 | CSUMB 10 – STAN 6
For the fourth straight game, the CSUMB bats eclipsed double-digit runs, as the Otters took down Stanislaus State, 10-6, to secure the series victory.
Nico Hartojo continued where he left off from game one, driving in two and scoring three times, while
Chase Lindemann and
KW Quilici recorded a pair of hits. Five different Otters tallied multi-RBI games.
Ryan Platero (4-0) earned the victory, allowing three runs on six hits, while fanning seven in five innings.
The early scoring theme continued in the nightcap as the Otters unloaded on a pair of two-run homers in the first inning to take a 4-1 lead.
Brady Miguel turned on a no-doubter down the line in right field to plate Lindemann and then Hartojo blasted one over the wall in center.
After the Warriors put up two to pull within one, at 4-3, the Otters scored two more in the second to push their lead to 6-3.
Lindemann drove a double down the line to right to score
Dominic Felice and then
JJ Engman recorded a sac-fly to left to plate
Kyle Barileau.
CSUMB put up another crooked number in the third, adding four runs to move the score to 10-3.
Felice opened the inning with the big hit, ripping a two-run double through the right side. Lindemann and Engman also tallied an RBI in the frame.
The two teams will close out the series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
