SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team used a strong second half effort to down visiting Cal State L.A., 53-52, Saturday afternoon at the Kelp Bed.
A 21-point outburst in the third quarter erased a 31-23 halftime deficit as the Otters entered the final frame with a 44-41 advantage after holding the Golden Eagles to 10 points in the third.
Cal State L.A. regained the lead with 7:18 left in the fourth, but
Camille Sroufe hit a three-pointer at the 6:28 mark to give CSUMB a 47-45 lead. She then connected again from long-range to extend the Otter lead to 53-47 with 1:32 remaining.
CSUMB clamped down on the defensive end the rest of the way, including thwarting multiple Golden Eagle looks in the waning seconds.
Deyliana Lews and
Kiki Roberts paced the Otters with 10 points apiece.
Sarah Shaw scored seven points and pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds. Lewis added nine boards, two blocks and two steals.
BACK IN THE WIN COLUMN: The Otters returned to the win column with the 53-52 victory on Saturday. CSUMB had been battling for the elusive victory since a 74-70 triumph over Sonoma State on Jan. 4.
LEWIS FINISHING STRONG:
Deyliana Lewis is capping off the season in impressive fashion. Lewis has scored 10 or more points in three of her last four games. Before her 15-point outburst at Cal State East Bay on Jan. 25, Lewis had only been in double-digits twice this season.
SHAW KEEPS CLIMBING: With her seven points on Saturday,
Sarah Shaw is now 16
th all-time on the scoring list with 498 points. She surpassed Camille Parker (492) and Aubri Smith (496) in the annals. Alma Lopez is next on the list at 15
th with 517 career points.
