Fast Start Not Enough Against First Place Cougars

Shaw records double-double, Garrett scores 17 in 68-56 setback

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Upset-minded Cal State Monterey Bay got off to a fast start, but CCAA-leading Cal State San Marcos put the defensive clamps on around halftime to pull away for a 68–56 win Thursday night in the CSUSM Sports Center.

The Otters got a 12–point, 10–rebound double–double from Sarah Shaw (Dana Point/JSerra HS) and a season–high 17 points from Sha'nece Garrett (Sonora HS/Merced College). Twenty-three points from Mina Tameilu and 14 boards from Truitt Reilly led the winning effort for San Marcos.

The Otters and Cougars played on even footing through the first 15 minutes, with CSUMB forging a 27–27 tie on a Garrett layup midway through the second quarter. That's when the game turned.

Over the ensuing 15 minutes, San Marcos embarked on a 24–5 run. By the time the dust settled at the end of the third quarter, the Cougars led 61–35. The Otters chipped away throughout the fourth, but never got closer than the 12–point final margin

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Rose Morse grabbed a defensive rebound with 2:06 remaining and San Marcos up 68–53.

DOUBLE–DOUBLE TROUBLE… Sarah Shaw recorded her career–high sixth double–double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds Thursday at Cal State San Marcos. They are the most by an Otter since Courtney Keaton claimed 10 during the 2017–18 campaign.

GARRETT FROM WAY DOWNTOWN… Sha'nece Garrett tied a career high with four 3–point field goals Thursday night at Cal State San Marcos. She previously made four against Warner Pacific when she was a freshman at Evergreen State (Wash.) in 2021. For the record, Ciarah Michalik also has a four 3–pointer game this season (at Cal Poly Humboldt on Jan. 11).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Sha'nece Garrett 17; REBOUNDS: Sarah Shaw 10; ASSISTS: Ciarah Michalik 3; BLOCKS: Gabby Kime/Deyliana Lewis 1; STEALS: Sha'nece Garrett/Kiki Roberts 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their trip up and down the state with a doubleheader at Sonoma State Saturday (Feb. 10). The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
