Fast Start Not Enough To Ground Golden Eagles

Charles Johnston posts 10th double-double in 86-65 setback

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay got off to a fast start, but Cal State L.A. caught fire after halftime to rally back for an 86–65 win Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

Sophomore Javon Johnson (Antioch/De La Salle HS) came off the bench to lead three Otters in double figures with 15 points. Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) added 13 and sophomore center Charles Johnston chipped in his 10th double–double of the season with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

The Otters led for the first 22 minutes, building a lead as big as 14 points well into the first half. But L.A. began its run in the final two minutes of the period finishing with a 7–1 run to go into the locker room down just five at 36–31.

The Golden Eagles came out of the break making 7-of-9 from long range as they pushed their advantage to 15 points six minutes after the restart, completing a 26–5 spurt that gave them control. CSUMB never got closer than 11 the rest of the way.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Deuce Walker made a pair of free throws to push the L.A. lead to 81–61 with 4:52 remaining.

JOHNSTON TIES DOUBLE–DOUBLE RECORD… With 10 points and 13 rebounds Saturday against Cal State L.A., Charles Johnston tied Joe Mitchell CSUMB single–season record with his 10th double–double of the season. Mitchell set the record in both his junior (2007–08) and senior (2008–09) seasons.

JOHNSTON UP TO No. 6 ON OTTER SEASON REBOUNDING CHART… Charles Johnston moved up to No. 6 on the Otter single–season rebounding list with his 13–rebound performance Saturday against Cal State L.A. He became the seventh player in Otter history to pass 200 rebounds in a season, ending the day with 210. Joe Mitchell set the CSUMB single–season rebounding record with 273 in 2008–09.

JOHNSTON UP TO No. 13 ON OTTER CAREER REBOUNDING CHART… Despite playing little more than 1 1/2 seasons in Blue and Gold, Charles Johnston moved up to No. 13 on the Otter career rebounding list with his 13–rebound performance Saturday against Cal State L.A. He now has 346 rebounds and needs eight more to pass Devoughn Lamont (349) and Jahvon Johnson (351) and tie Mateo Jones (354) for a spot in the Top 10.

NELSON'S STREAK CONTINUES… With 13 points Saturday versus Cal State L.A., Jailen Nelson ran his streak of double–figure scoring games to nine. Charles Johnston owns the longest streak by an Otter this season at 10 games.
