Five Otters In Double Figures Adds Up To Win

Charles Johnston leads the way with 17 as Otters beat San Marcos, 70-64

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Charles Johnston led five Otters in double figures with 17 points as Cal State Monterey Bay picked up a big CCAA win with a 70–64 victory at Cal State San Marcos Thursday night in the CSUSM Sports Center.

Johnston recorded his school–record 11th double–double of the season, finishing with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Joe Wall (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) added 13 points. Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) and Jordan Archie (Bishop Montgomery HS) each scored 11. Javon Johnson (De La Salle HS) came off the bench to score 10.

CSUMB led by as many as 14 points (30–16) late in the first half before San Marcos found its footing. The Cougars closed the half on a 12–4 run to pull within six at 34–28 by intermission.

The Cougars finally clawed their way to their only lead of the night when an Edwyn Collins 3–pointer made it 41–40 five minutes into the second half. But CSUMB responded with a long Wall trey to retake the lead. They never trailed again, thanks in part to clutch free-throw shooting from Archie, Johnston and Nelson, who combined to go 7-of-8 from the line over the final 42 seconds to tame the Cougars.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Charles Johnston made a pair of free throws with three seconds remaining to extend the Otter lead to 70–64.

RECORD–BREAKING NIGHT FOR JOHNSTON… With 17 points and 14 rebounds, Charles Johnston recorded his CSUMB record 11th double–double of the season. He broke the record he shared with Joe Mitchell, who had 10 as both a junior (2007–08) and senior (2008–09).

JOHNSTON JOINS REBOUNDING TOP 10… With 14 boards in Thursday's win at Cal State San Marcos, Charles Johnston vaulted all the way from No 13 to No. 9 on the Otter career rebounding list with 360. He needs three more to pass Kevin Loustale (2012–13) for No. 8.

NELSON'S STREAK CONTINUES: With 11 points Thursday at Cal State San Marcos, Jailen Nelson ran his streak of double–figure scoring games to 10. That matches Charles Johnston for the longest streak by an Otter this season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Charles Johnston 17; REBOUNDS: Charles Johnston 14; ASSISTS: Jordan Archie/Jailen Nelson 3; BLOCKS: Ameere Britton/Javon Johnson/Charles Johnston/Joe Wall 1; STEALS: Ameere Britton/Javon Johnson/Jailen Nelson/Jaden Tengan/Joe Wall 1.

THE LAST WORD… "I'm really proud of this group for what they are doing behind the scenes. It's been a very rough stretch of basketball and they show up every day to support each other, and that is not easy to do. Yes, it's great to win tonight, but even if we had lost, I have no doubt they would have shown up at practice tomorrow ready to play for one another. That's what will make this group special down the road." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their trip up and down the state with a doubleheader at Sonoma State Saturday (Feb. 10). The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
