Late Rally Falls Just Short In Sonoma

Otters have chance to tie in final minute of 65-59 loss

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay gave itself a chance to tie in the final minute of regulation, but host Sonoma State made a key stop then was perfect from the line to hold off the Otters for a 65–59 win Saturday night in The Wolves Den.

Sophomore Charles Johnston just missed his 12th double–double of the season with 17 points and nine rebounds. Joey Bilello (Littleton, Colo./Thunderridge HS) came off the bench to score 13 points while Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) reached double figures for the 11th consecutive game with 11 points.

CSUMB trailed by as many as 15 points in the second half before cutting the deficit to 60–57 on an Ameere Britton (Elk Grove HS) 3-point play with 55 seconds to play. The Otter defense clamped down for the stop that gave them a chance to tie, but the Sonoma defense returned the favor on the ensuing possession.

The Seawolves then made seven consecutive from the line over the final 22 seconds to seal the victory.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Dillon Iyawe made the first of two free throws with five seconds left to lift Sonoma's advantage to 64–59.

JOHNSTON JOINS REBOUNDING ELITE 8… With nine boards Saturday at Sonoma State, Charles Johnston moved past Kevin Loustale (2012–13) for the No. 8 spot on the Otter career rebounding list with 368. He needs 31 more to pass Jay Demaestri for the No. 7 spot.

NELSON'S STREAK CONTINUES: With 11 points Saturday at Sonoma state, Jailen Nelson ran his streak of double–figure scoring games to 11. That passes Charles Johnston's streak of 10 games for the longest streak by an Otter this season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Charles Johnston 17; REBOUNDS: Charles Johnston 9; ASSISTS: Jailen Nelson 4; BLOCKS: None; STEALS: Ameere Britton/Charles Johnston/Jaden Tengan 1.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to the friendly confines of The Kelp Bed for their final homestand of the season next Thursday and Saturday, Feb. 15–17. The action begins Thursday with a visit from Chico State for a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 5:30 with the men's tip set for 7:30 p.m.
