Johnston’s Double–Double Can’t Tame Wildcats

Charles Johnston posts 12th double-double with 11 points, 16 rebounds

SEASIDE, Calif. — Sophomore Charles Johnston extended his school record with his 12th double–double of 2024, but it wasn't enough to stop Chico State from pulling away in the second half of a 78–67 Wildcat victory Thursday night in The Kelp Bed.

Johnston paired 11 points with a game–high 16 rebounds. But CSUMB shooters couldn't provide support after halftime, going 2-for-14 from long range in the final 20 minutes, allowing Chico to build a 22–point lead midway through the half. Both of CSUMB's second half treys came in the final five minutes, helping CSUMB trim the deficit in half by the final buzzer.

The Otters began the game red hot, going 7-of-10 from the floor while building a 26–18 lead. But they made just two field goals over the final 7:43 of the half and Chico took advantage by reversing the deficit into a 42–34 lead at the break.

In addition to Johnston, Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) came off the bench to score 14 points. Ameere Britton (Elk Grove HS) passed a game–high five assists.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Kelvin Wright made a layup with 4:46 remaining to extend Chico's lead to 71–50.

JOHNSTON UP TO No. 5 ON OTTER SEASON REBOUNDING CHART… Charles Johnston moved up from No. 5 to No. 3 on the Otter single–season rebounding list with his 16–rebound performance Thursday vs. Chico State. With 249 rebounds this season, he needs 14 boards to pass Dexter Amey (2000–01) for No. 2. Joe Mitchell set the CSUMB single–season rebounding record with 273 in 2008–09.

CAREER DOUBLE–DOUBLES… Charles Johnston continues to chip away at Joe Mitchell's Otter career record of 23 double–doubles from 2006–09. Dexter Amey (2001–02) is next with 17. Johnston (15), Andrew Ferguson (12) and Devoughn Lamont (10) round out the Otter Top 5 for career double–doubles.

NELSON'S STREAK ENDS AT 11… With five points Thursday versus Chico State, Jailen Nelson saw his team season–best streak of double–figure scoring games end 11.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jaden Tengan 14; REBOUNDS: Charles Johnston 16; ASSISTS: Ameere Britton 5; BLOCKS: Javon Johnson/Charles Johnston/Joe Wall 1; STEALS: Jordan Archie 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude the home portion of their 2023–24 season by hosting Cal Poly Humboldt as part of a CCAA doubleheader Saturday. The women will tip-off at 1 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 3 p.m.
