Short–Handed Otters Fall Just Short

Six score in double figures in 100-98 loss to Humboldt

SEASIDE, Calif. — Despite playing without its leading scorer and rebounder, Cal State Monterey Bay came up just 2.5 seconds short of victory before falling to Cal Poly Humboldt 100–98 Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

With Charles Johnston, CSUMB's leading scorer and the nation's seventh–leading rebounder on the bench due to illness, it could have been a long afternoon for the Otters. Instead, they rallied to lead for much of the game before Humboldt's Ramiah Adedigba completed a driving layup 3–point play with 2.5 seconds on the clock to complete a comeback from six down in the final 80 seconds.

Despite the tough finish, the Otters received several noteworthy performances. Junior Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) led the way with 25 points, his team–leading sixth 20–plus point game of the season. Joe Wall (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) knocked down five 3–pointers as part of his 17–point afternoon in his final home game as an Otter.

Jaden Tengan (15), Javon Johnson (13), Joey Bilello (12) and Jordan Archie (10) also scored in double figures. Ameere Britton chipped in a career–high seven assists.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when a 3–point attempt at the buzzer fell just short for the Otters.

TAKE THEM, THEY'RE FREE… The Otters just missed a school record by converting on 17-of-18 (.944) free–throw attempts Saturday versus Cal Poly Humboldt. The Otters set the school record of .950 (19-of-20) against then Humboldt State on Jan. 28, 2017.

FROM WAY DOWNTOWN, TEAM EDITION… The Otters were a sizzling 15-of-27 (.556) from 3–point range Saturday versus Cal Poly Humboldt. The 15 makes rank No. 3 on the Otter list for 3–point field goals made in a game, only behind the school record of 18 set twice previously. The 55.6 percentage ranks No. 11 all–time.

FROM WAY DOWNTOWN, PLAYER EDITION… Joe Wall went 5-of-9 from long range Saturday versus Cal Poly Humboldt to tie Augie Johnston (2006–08) for No. 2 on the Otter all–time 3–point field goals list with 137.

NELSON PASSES 800–POINT MARK… Jailen Nelson's 25 points Saturday versus Cal Poly Humboldt brought his career total to 812, making him the 14th player in Otter history to pass 800 career points and the first since Jahvon Johnson turned the trick back in 2019. FYI, Johnson finished his career No. 3 on the Otter scoring list with 1,224 points.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jailen Nelson 15; REBOUNDS: Jailen Nelson/Joe Wall 4; ASSISTS: Ameere Britton 7; BLOCKS: Javon Johnson/Joey Bilello 1; STEALS: Jordan Archie/Joey Bilello 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for their final three games of the 2023–24 season, beginning Thursday (Feb. 22) at Cal Poly Pomona. The men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
