No. 19 Gators Spoil Senior Night

CSUMB says farewell to five seniors in final home match

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team played much better than the final scores would indicate, but criminally under-ranked San Francisco State caught fire late in the first set before rolling to a 25–19, 25–10, 25–17 win on Senior Night in The Kelp Bed Saturday.

CSUMB fans said farewell to five impactful seniors, but the night belonged to the No. 19 ranked Gators, who hit an impressive .360. Only No. 5 ranked Nebraska Kearney did better against the Otters this season (.368).

The Otters led for much of the first set, taking their last lead at 18–16 on an ace by senior Hannah Jo Castillon (Modesto/Central Catholic HS). But a 9–2 run brought SFSU across the finish line.

The Gators raced to a 12–4 lead to open set two and never let CSUMB get close. The Otters led early in the third before a 10–2 spurt put SFSU in control at 15–8.

Playing her final home match, Jackie Wahl (Palm Desert HS) led CSUMB with nine kills, breaking string of seven consecutive matches with double-digit kills. Seniors Mikayla Nolte (Long Beach Wilson HS) and Emily Kotelnikoff (Saskatoon, Sask.) led the net defense with two blocks apiece.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… an Izzy Issak kill capped a 10–2 run that gave the Gators a 15–8 lead in the third set.

SO LONG, FAREWELL, AUF WIEDERSEHEN, ADIEU… Otter fans bid farewell to five seniors who made their final appearances in The Kelp Bed Saturday versus San Francisco State: Kennedy Adams, Hannah Jo Castillon, Emily Kotelnikoff, Mikayla Nolte and Jackie Wahl. Note that Castillon is a junior but will be finishing her course work at CSUMB this year before heading to grad school.

DILLEY DIGS IT… With 12 digs Saturday versus San Francisco State, Mia Dilley moved into the Otter single-season Top 25. She now has 326 digs, tying the 2010 performance by former Otter great Dionna Lucas. She needs three more to slip past Lucas's 2008 season for No. 23 and 26 more to pass Otter Head Coach Courtney Materazzi for a spot in the Top 20.

NOLTE CLOSES IN ON 200… With a pair of block assists Saturday versus San Francisco State, Mikayla Nolte inched closer to becoming the seventh player in Otter history to record 200 career blocks. She'll enter the final weekend of her career needing six blocks to reach 200.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jackie 9.0; KILLS: Jackie Wahl 9; BLOCKS: Emily Kotelnikoff/Mikayla Nolte 2; ACES: Mia Dilley 3; DIGS: Mia Dilley 12.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 2024 schedule with a pair of road matches next weekend. They play at Chico State Friday (Nov. 15) at 5 p.m. before traveling to Turlock to take on Stanislaus State Saturday (Nov. 16) for a rare 2 p.m. matinée.
