Fast Start, Late Rally Not Enough In L.A.

Wahl reaches 20 kills for the fifth time in 4-set defeat

LOS ANGELES — A fast start and a late rally made things interesting, but they weren't enough to stop defending NCAA champion Cal State L.A. from earning a 19–25, 25–17, 25–17, 25–21 win over Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles.

Senior Jackie Wahl (Palm Desert HS) reached double figures in kills for the 14th time in the last 15 match, finishing with 20. Libero Mia Dilley (Clovis East HS/Fresno CC) dug a match-high 12 balls and Hannah Jo Castillon (Modesto/Central Catholic HS) posted her ninth double-double with  a match-high 24 assists and 11 digs.

The Otters pulled away midway through the opening set to take an early lead in the match. But L.A. pulled away early in each of the next three frames to wrest control from CSUMB.

Trailing 20–10 in the fourth, the Otters made a furious rally with a 11–3 run to pull to within 23–21 before the comeback finally stalled.
 

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… an Emily Elliot kill ended a late Otter rally and got L.A. to match point.

THE ROARING 20s… With 20 kills Saturday at Cal State L.A., Jackie Wahl reached the 20-kill mark for the fifth time this season.

THE MULTIPLE 20–KILL CLUB… Jackie Wahl is one of just four Otters ever to record 20+ kills five times in a single season, joining Julia Ashen (2013), Rheann Fall (2010–11) and Jessica Malcolm (2013–14).

WAHL CLIMBS INTO SEASON TOP 20 FOR KILLS… Jackie Wahl's 20 kills Saturday at Cal State L.A. vaulted her into the CSUMB single-season Top 20 for kills. She will enter play next week sitting at No. 19 with 273. She needs 27 to become the 15th player in Otter history to record 300 kills in a season.
