Otters Suffer Setback Against Cal State San Marcos

Sarah Shaw just misses another double-double

SEASIDE, Calif. – Sarah Shaw (Dana Point/JSerra HS) paced the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team with 11 points and nine rebounds as the Otters dropped a CCAA matchup against Cal State San Marcos, 80–54, Saturday afternoon from the Kelp Bed.

Deyliana Lewis (Stockton/Bear Creek HS) also added 11 points, grabbing five boards and recording a block in her 28 minutes on the floor.

The second quarter proved to be pivotal in the contest as CSUSM outscored CSUMB, 26–9 after a close opening frame where the Otters trailed by just three at 19–16. In that second quarter, CSUMB went cold, shooting just 23.5 percent (4-for-16) from the floor.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when a Mina Tameilau layup made it 67–38 Cougars with 8:36 remaining.

DOUBLE TROUBLE… Sarah Shaw poured in 11 points on Saturday. The junior has now posted double-digits in points in five consecutive games and has recorded 10 or more points seven times this season.

7–11… Sarah Shaw has pulled down seven or more rebounds in eight contests this season, including 10 or more on five occasions. She boasts a season-high of 14 rebounds against San Francisco State (11/30/23). Paired with her 8.8 boards per game, Shaw is scoring at an 11.2 clip.

SHAW MOVES CLOSER TO TOP-25… Sarah Shaw added 11 more points on Saturday to move her career total to 439. She needs eight points to crack the Otter top-25 for career points.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Sarah Shaw and Deyliana Lewis 11; REBOUNDS: Sarah Shaw 9; ASSISTS: Kiki Roberts and Amelia Smith 2; BLOCKS: Deyliana Lewis 1; STEALS: Ciarah Michalik 4.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road to face Cal Poly Humboldt on Thursday, Jan. 11. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CSUMB will complete the road trip at Chico State on Saturday, Jan. 13.
