Otter Women Hold Off Seawolves, 74-70

Ciarah Michalik double-double (22 pts, 10 reb) highlights win

SEASIDE, Calif. – Ciarah Michalik (Santa Rosa JC/Montgomery HS) poured in a career-high 22 points to lead the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team to its first CCAA victory of the season, downing Sonoma State, 74-70, Thursday evening from The Kelp Bed.

The Sonoma native also grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds to complete her first double–double, while Kiki Roberts (Eastern New Mexico/Vanden HS) added 16 points and six boards.

The Otters held the Seawolves to 39-percent shooting as CSUMB connected at a 48-percent clip and were 19-for-23 from the charity stripe.

Sonoma State took the early lead in the opening minute of the game, but that is all the visitors would enjoy as CSUMB seized the advantage on its next two possessions – a lead the Otters would never relinquish.

The victory over Sonoma was the first for the Otters since 2022 and marked just the second time in 10 contests that the Otters have knocked off the Seawolves.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALL OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Sonoma missed its final shot of the night with one second remaining.

20-20 VISION… Ciarah Michalik recorded her third 20-point game (22) of the season in Thursday's 74-70 victory. Michalik played a game-high 36 minutes as her aggressive play led to 13 points from the free-throw line.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Ciarah Michalik joined the double–double club with her first collegiate double dip, scoring a career–high 22 points with a career–high 10 rebounds in Thursday 74–70 win over Sonoma State. She became the first Otter not named Sarah Shaw to record a double–double in the past 64 games dating back to 2020.

DOUBLE TROUBLE… Sarah Shaw added 10 points in the win over Sonoma State on Thursday. The junior has now posted double-digits in points in four consecutive games and has recorded 10 or more points six times this season.

7-11… Sarah Shaw has pulled down seven or more rebounds in seven contests this season, including 10 or more on five occasions. She boasts a season-high of 14 rebounds against San Francisco State (11/30/23). Paired with her 8.7 boards per game, Shaw is scoring at an 11.2 clip.

SHAW MOVES CLOSER TO TOP 25… Sarah Shaw added 10 more points on Thursday to move her career total to 428. She needs 19 points to crack the Otter top-25 for career points.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Ciarah Michalik 22; REBOUNDS: Ciarah Michalik 10; ASSISTS: Deyliana Lewis 3; BLOCKS: Deyliana Lewis 3; STEALS: Deyliana Lewis and Gigi Israel 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters close out the first week of play in the new year when they host Cal State San Marcos on Saturday, Jan. 6. The women will tip-off at 1 p.m., and the men will follow at 3 p.m.
