Clutch Shooting Leads Otters Past Humboldt, 76-70

CSUMB shoots 90 percent from the line to hold on for win

ARCATA, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay made a season-best 91 percent from the free-throw line to hold off upset-minded Cal Poly Humboldt for a 76–70 win Thursday night in Lumberjack Arena.

Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) led the way with his first double–double of the season, leading five Otters in double figures with 17 points while pulling down a game–high 10 rebounds. Freshman Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) added 15 points, including a perfect 8-of-8 night from the stripe.

CSUMB (6–7, 4–4 CCAA) led for three quarters of the game, but had to come back from a 4–point deficit with eight minutes remaining. They didn't take the lead for good until Joe Wall (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) knocked down a running jumper in the lae to break a 58–58 tie with six minutes left.

The Otters increased their lead down the stretch to as many as seven, but Humboldt rallied back to within two points twice in the final minute. That's when Nelson and Tengan both came up clutch, completing both ends of a pair of 1-and-1 opportunities.

Sophomore Javon Johnson (De La Salle HS) delivered the final blow by stealing a Lumberjack inbounds attempt and turning into into a dunk with eight seconds to play.

In addition to Nelson and Tengan, Johnson scored 13 points and Wall scored 11. Sophomore center Charles Johnston chipped in 10 points and six boards.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Javon Johnson's steal and dunk closed the scoring with less than eight seconds remaining.

JOHNSTON PLAYS THE PERCENTAGES… Charles Johnston entered Thursday's game at Cal Poly Humboldt ranked No. 1 nationally in field goal percentage at 72.4 percent. The Aussie sophomore actually saw that percentage go down when he made "only" 71.4 percent from the floor (5-of-7) the the 76–70 Otter victory.

TAKE THEM, THEY'RE FREE… CSUMB's 90.5 percent (19-of-21) effort from the free-throw line in Thursday's 76–70 win at Cal Poly Humboldt wasn't just good, it was historically good. That mark ranks No. 3 in the CSUMB record book for free-throw percentage in a game. The Otter record of 95 percent (19-of-20) came against (then) Humboldt State on Jan. 28, 2017.

THE JOE WALL 500… Joe Wall moved over the 500 –point career mark with 11 points in Thursday's 76–70 win over Cal Poly Humboldt. He now has 506 total points, including including 58 points scored while playing at NCAA Division I member Seattle University.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jailen Nelson 17; REBOUNDS: Jailen Nelson 10; ASSISTS: Jailen Nelson 7; BLOCKS: Joey Bilello/Joavon Johnson 1; STEALS: Five Otters 1.

THE LAST WORD…
"I thought tonight was great because when Humboldt had us down four with about eight minutes left, our guys kept their composure. They shared the ball and knocked down all of their free throws down the stretch. I'm especially proud of how balanced our offensive attack was." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their longest driving roadtrip of the season with a doubleheader at Chico State Saturday (Jan. 13). The women will tip-off at 1 p.m. and the men will tip at 3 p.m.
