Johnston’s Double–Double Not Enough In Chico

Sophomore posts 6th double-double in 87-76 setback

CHICO, Calif. — Sophomore center Charles Johnston enjoyed another big game, but it wasn't enough to stop nationally–ranked (No. 15) Chico State from taking an 87–76 win Saturday afternoon in Acker Gym.

Johnston recorded his sixth double–double of the season, grabbing a game–high 10 rebounds to go along with a career–high 27 points. But the Chico duo of Adam Afifi and Joshua Hamilton each poured in a career–high 31 points to blunt Johnston's big afternoon.

The game was close throughout, although Chico threatened to run away midway through the second half when it used a quick burst to open its biggest lead at 65–51. The Otters responded with a 12–0 run to pull back to within two over the next four minutes.

CSUMB got a stop to give itself a chance to take the lead when its Achilles heel on this day — the turnover — reared its ugly head at the most inopportune time. The 3-pointer by Hamilton that followed got the Wildcat lead back to five and left the Otters in catch-up mode for the rest of the game.

Chico scored seven points from the line in the final 44 seconds to increase its lead to the final margin.

In addition to Johnston, Ameere Britton (Elk Grove HS) came off the bench to score a season–high 14 points for the Otters. Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) scored 13 points and pulled down six boards.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Adam Afifi knocked down a free throw to increase the Chico lead to 83–74 with 28 seconds remaining.

KNOCK THE BLOCK… Sophomore guard Javon Johnson blocked a career–high four shots Saturday at Chico State. They are the most by an Otter since Greg Polosky swatted five Cal State San Bernardino shots on Dec. 30, 2017 and the most by an Otter guard since Andy Canon set the school record with six at (then) Cal State Hayward on Jan. 22, 2002.

DOUBLE–DOUBLE TROUBLE… Charles Johnston recorded his career–high sixth double–double of the season with 27 points and 10 rebounds Saturday at Chico State. He entered the weekend ranked No. 24 nationally in double–doubles.

NELSON PASSES JONES IN POINTS… Jailen Nelson's 13 points Saturday at Chico State give him 662 for his career and move him past Mateo Jones (2014–18) into 19th place on the Otter career scoring list. Next up is Derrick Anderson (2010–13) in 18th with 677 points.

NELSON CATCHES ZELLER IN STEALS… Jailen Nelson recorded a pair of thefts Saturday at Chico, giving him 55 in his career and tying him with Evan Zeller (2014–17) for No. 17 on the Otter all–time list.

THE BALL WAS A BIT SLIPPERY… The Otters have done exceptionally well taking care of the ball, but they had a bit of a hiccup Saturday at Chico, committing 19 turnovers, their second most of the season. They came into the day averaging just 12 per game.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Charles Johnston 27; REBOUNDS: Charles Johnston 10; ASSISTS: Jordan Archie 4; BLOCKS: Javon Johnson 4; STEALS: Jailen Nelson 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home to host defending NCAA West Region champion Cal State San Bernardino Thursday (Jan. 18) as part of a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
