Cold Shooting Haunts Otters In 72–63 Loss

Otters make season-low three 3-pointers against San Bernardino

SEASIDE, Calif. – Three Otters scored in double-figures that included another double-double from Charles Johnston, but it wasn't enough Thursday as the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team fell, 72-63, Thursday evening from the Kelp Bed.

Johnston recorded his seventh double-double of the season, pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds, as he joined Jaden Tengan and Jailen Nelson with 12 points apiece.

CSUMB was within five with just over three minutes remaining in the second half, but CSUSB used an 8-2 run to push the lead to double-digits at 66-55 with 1:34 left.

Despite shooting 40-percent from the floor, cold shooting from beyond-the-arc proved to be costly as the Otters could only connect on 3-of-20 (15%) from long range.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Robby Robinson made a free throw with 20 seconds remaining to put San Bernardino up 70-62.

DOUBLE–DOUBLE TROUBLE… Charles Johnston recorded his seventh double–double of the season by finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

PUT A LID ON IT… Thursday proved to be an uncharacteristic shooting night from deep for the Otters, who made a season–low 3-of-20 (.150) from beyond the arc. It was the lowest percentage and fewest 3-pointers made by the Otters since they went 2-for-21 against Central Washington on Nov. 12, 2021, a span of 64 games.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Charles Johnston/Jailen Nelson/Jaden Tengan 12; REBOUNDS: Charles Johnston 10; ASSISTS: Jailen Nelson 4; BLOCKS: Jordan Archie 2; STEALS: Joey Bilello 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will conclude their brief homestand when they host Cal Poly Pomona Saturday (Jan. 20) as part of a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 1 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 3 p.m.
