Short-Handed Otters Fall To Pomona, 74-64

Jaden Tengan leads MB with 21 points

SEASIDE, Calif. — Short-handed Cal State Monterey Bay couldn't sustain a fast start and visiting Cal Poly Pomona took advantage to rally for a 74–64 win Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

Freshman Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) led all scorers with 21 points. Sophomore Charles Johnston was poised for a big game before picking up three fouls in the first half and his fourth early in the second. Nevertheless, he posted his ninth double–double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Pomona, which entered the day ranked 287th of 289 NCAA Division II teams in 3-point shooting at 24 percent, caught fire from beyond the arc, going a season-best 10-for-23 from long range. On the flip side, the normally strong shooting Otters, shot a season-low 33.9 percent from the floor.

CSUMB hits the road for its next two games, beginning Thursday with a rematch against Cal State East Bay in Hayward.
