Otters Return To Win Column With Sweep

CSUMB rolls past Academy of Art at Seawolf Classic

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team jumped back into the win column in a big way with a convincing 25–15, 25–21, 25–14 sweep of Pac West Conference rival Academy of Art Thursday night in the Wolves Den on the Sonoma State campus.

Junior outside hitter Jackie Wahl (Palm Desert HS) led a balanced Otter offense with 10 kills. Fellow pin hitter Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS) added nine kills. The duo just missed a pair of double–doubles as Honberger added 10 digs and Wahl chipped in nine.

Senior setter Ashley Vanderpan (Elk Grove HS) quarterbacked the most efficient Otter attack of the young season with 30 assists as CSUMB sided out at a season–best 65 percent clip.

CSUMB won sets one and three with relative ease, but had to hold off an Urban Knight challenge in the second. Art rallied to tie the set at 20–20 before consecutive kills by Wahl broke the deadlock. The Otters never trailed again in the match.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… a pair of Jackie Wahl kills capped a 5–point run that put CSUMB up 20–10 in the third set.

THEY'RE ACES… The Otters served 11 aces in Thursday's sweep of Academy of Art. That ties for the No. 8 mark in CSUMB history for aces in a sweep.

PLAYING THE PERCENTAGES… The Otters hit a combined .337 (40–10–89) in Thursday's sweep of Academy of Art. That mark is tied for No. 14 on the CSUMB all–time list for attack percentage in a match.

THE LAST WORD… "We truly played collectively tonight, from our team communication to our schemes against Art. Our offensive efficiency really stood out overall, with Kea Veenendahl attacking really aggressively in particular." — CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude play at the Seawolf Classic Friday with a pair of rematches. They will face Dominican University at 12:15 p.m. and Westmont College at 4:45 p.m.
