ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay split a pair of matches Saturday to conclude play at the Seawolf Invitational Saturday in the Wolves Den.
The Otters began the day by sweeping Dominican University for the second time this season, winning 25–15, 25–14, 25–20. The afternoon saw them fall in five to Westmont College for the second consecutive week, this time dropping a 25–16, 19–25, 33–35, 25–20, 6–15 decision.
The Otters hit better than .300 for the second consecutive match in the win over Dominican, finishing the match at .321. Senior Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS) led a balanced attack with 11 kills. She completed her third double–double of the season by adding 11 digs.
The Westmont match turned in a dramatic third set that saw the Otters save eight match points before the Warriors finally closed it out to take a 2–1 lead. CSUMB rallied to force a fifth set, racing to an early lead as Savanna Maker (Salinas HS) put down four kills in the 25-20 win.
Westmont responded by scoring seven of the first eight points in the fifth to put the match on ice.
Maker led a trio of Otters in double figures with 14 kills against Westmont.
Jackie Wahl (Palm Desert HS) added 13 kills and senior setter
Ashley Vanderpan (Elk Grove HS) passed a career–high 58 assists.
The Otters return home to open California Collegiate Athletic Association play Friday (Sept. 15) against Cal Poly Pomona. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
