No. 20 Cal Poly Pomona Pulls Away From Otters

Jackie Wahl leads Otters with 10-kill, 11-dig double-double

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay kept things interesting against No. 20 Cal Poly Pomona, but the Broncos pulled away midway through the match to take a 25–21, 16–25, 25–14, 25–16 decision Friday evening in The Kelp Bed.

Junior Jackie Wahl (Palm Desert HS) led a balanced Otter attack with 10 kills. Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS) chipped in eight kills while Savanna Maker (Salinas HS) and Kea Veenendaal (Boulder, Colo./Fairview HS) added seven each.

Veenendaal led the net defense with five blocks. Honberger added a team–high 13 digs.

CSUMB (3–5, 0–1 CCAA) looked to be on a roll after winning the second set going away to even the match. With the third set at 14–13 Pomona, however, the Broncos caught fire.

Pomona (8–1, 1–0) scored 11 of the final 12 points in the frame to take control of the match. A 5–1 run early in the fourth gave the Broncos a 10–6 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… bookend kills by Sarah Ybarra highlighted a run that gave Pomona 22–14 lead in the fourth game.

DOUBLE–DOUBLE… Jackie Wahl recorded her fourth double–double Friday night against Cal Poly Pomona with 10 kills and 11 digs. That gives Wahl the team lead over Kaylie Honberger, who has three.

VANDERPAN JOINS THE 700 CLUB… Ashley Vanderpan became the 10th player in Otter history to surpass 700 career assists when she passed 31 Friday night against Cal Poly Pomona. She now has 718 assists. She needs 69 more to pas Aly Fullbright (2019–22) for No. 9 on the Otter list.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Kea Veenendaal 11.5; KILLS: Jackie Wahl 10; BLOCKS: Kea Veenendaal 5; ACES: Kea Veenendaal 2; DIGS: Kaylie Honberger 13.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their brief 2–match homestand by hosting Cal State San Marcos for a Saturday matinee. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
