San Marcos Outlasts Otters In Thriller

CSUMB saves eight match points in 4–set defeat

SEASIDE, Calif. — A slow start proved costly to the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team Saturday afternoon as Cal State San Marcos outlasted the Otters to take a thrilling 25–16, 26–24, 30–32, 25–23 decision in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB spread its attack around, with nine players recording kills Saturday, led by junior middle blocker Mikayla Nolte (Long Beach Wilson HS), who posted a season–high 12 kills to go along with six blocks. Outside hitters Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS) and Jackie Wahl (Palm Desert HS) joined Nolte in double figures with 10 kills apiece.

The heavy right arm of outside hitter Sofia Hedqvist put down a career–high 23 kills to lead a top–heavy attack for San Marcos.

San Marcos jumped on top early to win the opening set going away. The Otters were poised to even the match leading 23–20 and 24–22 in the second set before the Cougars scored four consecutive points to earn a commanding 2–0 lead.

CSUMB saved five match points in the third set before kills by Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS) and Honberger completed the 32–30 victory. The Otters saved three more match points in the fourth before Hedqvist's 23rd kill sealed the match.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Sofia Hedqvist's kill in transition on match point secured the Cougars's 25–23 win in the fourth set to close the match.

DOUBLE–DOUBLE, RIGHT BACK AT YOU… After Jackie Wahl took the team lead with her fourth double–double Friday night against Cal Poly Pomona, Kaylie Honberger pulled even with her fourth of the season, posting 10 kills and a match–high 15 digs Saturday against San Marcos.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Freshmen Jenna Kraft and Malia Thorne made their debutante collegiate appearances Saturday against Cal State San Marcos. Kraft came in late in the second set to serve three points while registering her first dig and assist. Thorne started sets three and four, hitting .333 with four kills and a pair of blocks.

TOP 20 NOLTE… Mikayla Nolte recorded her 20th solo block to tie Anela Visesio (2014–18) for 20th on the Otter career list.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Mikayla Nolte 15.5; KILLS: Mikayla Nolte 12; BLOCKS: Mikayla Nolte 6; ACES: Four Otters 1; DIGS: Kaylie Honberger 15.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for a pair of tough matches next week, starting Thursday at nationally–ranked Cal State San Bernardino. CSUMB returns home to host Chico State on Oct. 6.
