Otters Beat Sonoma To Complete Weekend Sweep

Balanced effort leads to 4-set victory

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team completed an impressive weekend sweep with a 25–18, 25–10, 18–25, 25–23 win over CCAA contender Sonoma State Saturday night in The Kelp Bed.

Senior setter Ashley Vanderpan (Elk Grove HS/San Diego State) did a solid job moving the ball around once again—when she wasn't busy putting away one of her own season-high seven kills—getting all six hitters into the action.  Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS) led the way with 14 kills. Senior middle Kea Veenendaal (Boulder, Colo./Fairview HS) added 11 kills.

Both layers of the Otter defense made their presence felt as well. Vanderpan led both units with 17 digs and six blocks. Veenendaal matched her six blocks while Honberger and Dani Smith (Cave Creek, Ariz./Cactus Shadow HS) added 13 digs apiece.

CSUMB used an early 7–0 run to take control of the opening set. Sonoma pulled to within 16–15 for a brief moment before the Otters eased away to take an early lead.

A 12–3 run midway through the second set put CSUMB in control of both the frame and the match before the Seawolves found their footing in the third. The Otters were within 13–10 when Riley Beyma went to the line to spark a 5–point run that helped Sonoma extend the match.

The fourth set settled into a sideout war, with the teams combining for 31 sideouts. Sonoma got the first break when Brynna Slayton served an ace then set Jen Trephan for a kill and a 23–21 lead.
Honberger quickly put things in order for the Otters, however, earning the final sideout of the match with her 14th kill of the evening. She then went to the line to serve the final three points.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHENMalia Peterson's kill in transition on match point sealed the otter win.

CAN YOU DIG IT? A season–high four Otters recorded double figure digs in Saturday's win over Sonoma State. Ashley Vanderpan led the way with 17. Kaylie Honberger and Dani Smith added 13 digs apiece. Kaila Uota chipped in 10.

SETTING THE STANDARD… Ashley Vanderpan passed 37 assists in Saturday's win over Sonoma State to take sole possession of the No. 8 spot on the Otter career assist list with 867. She needs 133 more to become the eighth player in Otter history to reach 1,000 career assists.

KAYLIE IN THE TOP 10… Kaylie Honberger's 14 kills in Saturday's win over Sonoma State moved her up to the No. 8 spot on the Otter career kills list with 705. She passed Victory Clardy (696), Maddy Underwood (702) and Jenna Tobin (703) Saturday night.

KAYLIE HAS COACH IN HER SITES… Although the next player to pass on the Otter career kills list is Christine Rickets at 768, Kaylie Honberger might be looking one step beyond that. Current holding the No. 6 spot with 774 career kills is CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Kaylie Honberger 15.0; KILLS: Kaylie Honberger 14; BLOCKS: Ashley Vanderpan/Kea Veenendaal 6; ACES: Kaila Uota/Malia Peterson/Kaylie Honberger/Mikayla Nolte 1; DIGS: Ashley Vanderpan 17.

THE LAST WORD… "What a match! Another night of tough competition and we really fought to finish in that fourth set. Our offense once again was strong but efficient, and we're so proud of how we involved the middles. Kea (Veenendaal) had one of her best matches of the season. From the service line to the net, we achieved more than a win, showing ourselves what we can do and the type of team we can be." — CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4–match homestand by hosting Chico State Friday (Oct. 6). First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
