Otters Rally Back To Tame Wildcats In Five

Honberger’s 17 kills, Smith’s 23 digs lead the way

SEASIDE, Calif. — Longtime fans of the volleyball history between Cal State Monterey Bay and Chico State didn't begin to settle into Friday's showdown until the match reached its third set with Chico holding a 2–0 lead. That because veterans of the series new the match wasn't yet halftime over.

True to the character of this intense rivalry, the Otters battled back, coming all the way back, in fact, to earn a 15–25, 22–25, 25–23, 25–18, 15–11 win in The Kelp Bed.

Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS) led all attackers with 17 kills. Kea Veenendaal (Boulder, Colo./Fairview HS) was a big presence at the net with six blocks while libero Dani Smith (Cave Creek, Ariz./Cactus Shadow HS) led a staunch back row defense with 23 digs.

Chico was in top form early. So fine tuned were the Wildcats that they didn't make their first hitting error until the 49th rally of the match.

Chico jumped to quick leads in the first three sets. In fact, except for a brief 12–11 Otter lead in Set 2, the Wildcats never trailed until late in the third.

CSUMB finally found life tied 20–20 in the third, when an Emily Child (El Dorado Hills/Oak Ridge HS) kill and a Honberger ace put the Otters on top. Veenendaal's kill on set point extended the match.
The teams engaged in a sideout war to open the fourth set before Veenendaal went to the line to serve five points in a 6–0 run that snapped a 14–14 tie.

Chico scored the first point of the fifth set but never led after that. Honberger put down her 16th kill to break a 9–9 tie then teamed with Veenendaal to block Lauryn Osendorf, giving the Otters an 11–9 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHENKaylie Honberger's 17th kill of the night sealed match point.

OF COURSE IT WENT FIVE… The Otters had Wildcats now have gone the distance in 18 of their 37 meetings dating back to their fisst meeting in 2004 (which, of course, went five). It marks the ninth time that one team or the other rallied back from 0–2 down to force a fifth set and the fourth time in the series that a team lost the first two sets and rallied back to win.

CAN YOU DIG IT? The Otters collected a season–high 87 digs in Friday's win over Chico State. They're the most digs by CSUMB this season and the most by the Otters since they had 88 in a 5–set win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sept. 30, 2022.

CAN YOU DIG IT, PLAYER EDITION… Dani Smith led the big night by the back row with a career–high 23 digs Friday versus Chico State. She is the second Otter to reach 20+ digs this season. Kaila Uota had 24 against Westmont College on Sept. 2.

HONBERGER HAS COACH IN HER SITES, PART I… With a career–high 61 swings in Friday's win over Chico State, Kaylie Honberger inched closer to Head Coach Courtney Materazzi on the Otter career attack attempts list. Honberger will enter Saturday's match with Stanislaus State holding the No. 7 spot with 2,486 swings. She needs 169 more to catch Materazzi for No. 6.

KAYLIE HAS COACH IN HER SITES, PART II… Although the next player to pass on the Otter career kills list is Christine Rickets at 768, Kaylie Honberger might be looking one step beyond that. Honberger will enter Saturday's match with Stanislaus State at No. 8 with 722 kills. Currently holding the No. 6 spot with 774 career kills is CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi.

NOLTE JOINS THE CENTURY CLUB… With four block assists in Friday's win over Chico State, Mikayla Nolte became the 21st player in Otter history to reach 100 career block assists (102).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Kaylie Honberger 18.5; KILLS: Kaylie Honberger 17; BLOCKS: Kea Veenendaal 6; ACES: Kea Veenendaal 3; DIGS: Dani Smith 23.

THE LAST WORD… "We really had to work and fight the whole match through to pull this win out, starting with a big fight in the third to keep our chances alive. Through fatigue and frustration we continued to battle for a solid result against a big swinging Chico team. Everyone had a big time moment in the match, particularly in the fourth and fifth sets." — CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–match homestand by hosting Stanislaus State Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
