Another Rally Runs Win Streak To Four

CSUMB beats Stanislaus in four behind 12 aces

SEASIDE, Calif. — Less than 24 hours after rallying from two sets down to beat Chico State Friday night, the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team dropped the first set then came back to defeat Stanislaus State 17–25, 25–20, 25–18, 28–26 Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

It marked the fourth consecutive win for CSUMB (7–8, 4–4 CCAA), which moves right into the thick of the CCAA Tournament race with the win streak. Stanislaus fell to 6–10 and 1–7.

Outside hitters Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS) and Jackie Wahl (Palm Desert HS) led a balanced Otter offense with 11 and 10 kills respectively. After failing to register a block over the first set and a half, the Otter block found its groove, finishing with nine. Ashley Vanderpan (Elk Grove HS/San Diego State) and Dani Smith (Cave Creek, Ariz./Cactus Shadow HS) dominated the back row with 18 and 16 digs apiece.

CSUMB really took control of Saturday's match at the service line, collecting 12 aces, including a career–high six from Wahl.

Stanislaus was in top form early, passing well enough to feed the Warriors' potent middle attack. But as the Otters found their rhythm at the line, they began to neutralize a big part of the Stanislaus offense to help fuel the comeback.

Trailing one set to none and 12–7 in the second set, the Otters used a quick 8–2 run to take their first set lead. A Wahl kill and Vanderpan ace broke an 18–18 tie, allowing CSUMB to ease away and even the match.

The Otters trailed early in the third but used runs of 10–3 and 17–5 to pull away for the win. The Warriors saved three match points in a taut fourth set before a Kea Veenendaal (Boulder, Colo./Fairview HS) ace on match point sealed it.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHENKea Veenendaal served CSUMB's 12th ace for match point.

FOUR IN A ROW… With Saturday's win over Stanislaus State, the Otter win streak has reached four matches. It equals the longest win streak by CSUMB since winning nine in a row from Sept. 22–Oct. 21, 2018.

SHE'S ACES… Jackie Wahl served a career–high six aces in Saturday's win over Stanislaus State. That is tied for the No. 2 mark in Otter history for aces in a 4–set match. Lauren Reeves set the record with seven against Chico State in 2021.

THEY'RE ACES… With 12 total aces in Saturday's win over Stanislaus State, the Otters matched the No. 4 spot in their record book for aces in a 4–set match. The record remains 15 against Chico State in 2021.

VEENENDAAL JOINS THE CENTURY CLUB… With 12 blocks on the weekend, Kea Veenendaal became the 24th player in Otter history to record at least 100 career block assists (106). That ranks No. 24 in Otter history, one spot behind teammate Mikayla Nolte (132).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jackie Wahl 16.5; KILLS: Kaylie Honberger 11; BLOCKS: Kea Veenendaal 6; ACES: Jackie Wahl 6; DIGS: Ashley Vanderpan 18.

THE LAST WORD… "We continue to stay focused on what we can control and owning our side of the net. We're so proud of our serving overall and ability to talk through the line up changes Stan made throughout the match. It was another match that tested our composure and self trust as we reached the end of a match." — CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters prepare for travel partner week when they'll face Cal State East Bay in consecutive matches Oct. 12 in Hayward and Oct. 14 in The Kelp Bed
