Otters Open Season With Impressive Win, Three Tough Losses

CSUMB sweeps Dominican before losing in five three times

SEASIDE, Calif. — After opening the season with a dominating sweep of Dominican University, the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team suffered three consecutive 5–set losses at the Otter Classic Sept. 1–2 in The Kelp Bed.

The Otters got 11 kills from all–tournament selection Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS) in a 25–12, 25–12, 25–17 season–opening sweep of Dominican Friday afternoon. Minnesota State spoiled opening day by gridning at out 25–14, 22–25, 18–25, 25–23, 15–9 win over CSUMB in Friday's final match.

CSUMB began play Saturday by going up two sets to one against Northwest Nazarene before the Nighthawks rallied for a 25–20, 21–25, 20–25, 25–15, 15–7 win. Westmont College concluded tournament play by pulling another comeback over CSUMB, this time winning 25–22, 14–25, 17–25, 25–20, 15–11.

Honberger led the Otter offense with 55 kills. Junior middle blocker Mikayla Nolte (Long Beach Wilson HS) and senior setter Ashley Vanderpan (Elk Grove HS) led the net defense with 17 and 16 total blocks respectively. Kaila Uota (Salinas HS) and Vanderpan anchored the backline with 74 and 64 digs respectively.

 

HONBERGER 12TH TO 600… With 55 kills on the weekend, Kaylie Honberger became the 12th Otter to reach 600 career kills (621). Shee needs 16 more to pass Melanie Lashbrook (2008–11) for No. 11 on the Otter career kills list.

HONBERGER CATCHES COACH… With nine service aces over the weekend, Kaylie Honberger tied Head Coach Courtney Materazzi (2004–07) for No. 9 on the Otter career service aces list with 78. She needs seven more to pass Rachel Cookus (86 from 20012–15) for the No. 8 spot.

TOP 10 VANDERPAN… With 118 assists over the weekend, Ashley Vanderpan moved into the Otter Top 10 for career assists with 562. She passed Juliette Ward (536). She needs 225 to pass Aly Fullbright (786 from 2019–22) for ninth place.

NOLTE JOINS THE CETURY CLUB… Mikayla Nolte became the 23rd blocker in Otter history to join the century club this weekend when her 17 total blocks brought her career total to 104.

ALL–TOURNAMENT TIME… For her efforts this weekend, Kaylie Honberger earned a spot on the 8–player Otter Classic all–tournament team. Joining Honberger from Northwest Nazarene were MVP Maren Dent, Caroline McMahon and Gabby Moore; From Minnesota State Kiya Durant and Sophie Tietz; and from Westmont College Taylor Distleberg and Alexa Shiner.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to Wine Country for the Seawolves Volleyball Classic Sept. 7–8 at Sonoma State. The Otters will take on Academy of Art on Sept. 7 before facing rematches with Dominican University and Westmont College Sept. 8.
