Otters Bring Brooms To Sweep Lumberjacks

Balanced effort leads CSUMB to 25-17, 25-14, 25-21 victory

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball returned to the win column in impressive fashion with a 25–17, 25–14, 25–21 sweep of Cal Poly Humboldt Friday evening in The Kelp Bed.

Senior setter Ashley Vanderpan (Elk Grove HS/San Diego State) collected 31 assists while spreading the ball to seven different attackers, six of whom registered multiple kills. Senior outside hitter Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS), senior middle Kea Veenendaal (Boulder, Colo./Fairview HS) and freshman opposite Emily Child (El Dorado Hills/Oak Ridge HS) led the balanced attack with eight kills apiece.

Sophomore Dani Smith (Cave Creek, Ariz./Cactus Shadow HS) made her first start at libero and matched her career high with 13 digs. Kaila Uota (Salinas HS) made the switch to defensive specialist Friday and led all servers with two aces.

CSUMB never trailed at any point in the match, racing to early leads in all three sets. Humboldt made things interesting in the third, rallying from 22–14 down to within 23–20 before Veenendaal and Vanderpan combined to stuff Lindsey McLaughlin and set up match point for the Otters.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… a Kaylie Honberger kill snuffed the final Humboldt rally for match point.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… All four Otter victories this season have come via the sweep.

TAKING CARE OF THE ROCK… CSUMB's success in 2023 has been tied directly to how well it takes care of the ball. All four Otter wins have come when they make fewer errors than their opponents (Humboldt committed 23 errors to CSUMB's 10 Friday night). The Otters are 0–4 when they make more errors than their opponents.

HONBERGER APPROACHING 700 KILLS… Kaylie Honberger is on pace to become the 10th member of CSUMB's 700-kill club when the Otters host Sonoma State Saturday. Her eight kills in Friday's win over Cal Poly Humboldt giver her 691. Victoria Clardy (2012–15) currently sits in 10th place on the career kills list with 696.

VANDERPAN PASSES THE 800-ASSIST MARK… Ashley Vanderpan became the ninth player in Otter history to pass 800 career assists in Friday's win over Cal Poly Humboldt. Her 31 assists Friday night give her 830 as an Otter. She needs four more to pass Leana Moleta (2012–15) for No. 8 on the Otter career list.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Kea Veenendaal 10.5; KILLS: Emily Child/Kaylie Honberger/Kea Veenendaal 8; BLOCKS: Kea Veenendaal 4; ACES: Kaila Uota 2; DIGS: Dani Smith 13.

THE LAST WORD… "I'm so proud of our focus, communication and commitment to owning those elements of our play throughout the match. All of the hitters were so efficient, but didn't sacrifice being aggressive to hit those goals. We really took our preparation into the game and we look forward to continuing to build from this." — CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4–match homestand by hosting high–flying Sonoma State Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
