Otters Take Driver’s Seat With 8–2 Win

CSUMB beats Cal Poly Pomona in opener of best 2-of-3

SEASIDE, Calif. — No. 9 Cal State Monterey Bay took the driver's seat at the NCAA Division II Baseball West Regional with an 8–2 win over Cal Poly Pomona in the opening game of the best 2-of-3 portion of the tournament Friday at the Otter Sports Complex.

With the win, CSUMB (38–16) moves to within one game of advancing to next weekend's NCAA Super Regional. Pomona (29–22) will have to beat the Otters twice to advance.

The game figured to be a pitcher's duel between CSUMB's undefeated Ryan Platero (San Benito HS/MPC) and Cal Poly's CCAA Pitcher of the Year Caleb Reyes. Platero won the duel, striking out five while allowing just two runs to improve to 7–0 on the season.

The Otter offense drove Reyes from the game early. CSUMB bats touched him for seven runs in 4 1/3 innings, forcing him to throw 117 pitches.

Aidan Lee (Live Oak/USF) and Colby Harrison (Chico/Sacramento CC) combined for four innings of 2–hit, shutout relief to seal the win.

The Otters never trailed after Jacob Dressler's (San Jose/West Valley HS) infield single opened the scoring in the third. They broke the game open in the fifth when a 3–run laser from Nico Hartojo (Arvada, Colo./MPC) and a 2–run shot from Cole Murchison (Toronto, Ont./West Valley College) extended the lead to 8–2.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Cole Murchison's fourth home run of the season capped a 5–run Otter fifth, extending the lead to 8–2.

ONE WIN AWAY, PART I… The Otters need one win to advance to the NCAA Super Regional for the first time in program history.

ONE WIN AWAY, PART II… The Otters need one win to tie the program record for most wins in a season at 39 (2013, 2018).

THE STREAKS GO ON… Brady Miguel and Chase Lindemann kept their impressive streaks of reaching base going in Friday's win over Cal Poly Pomona. Miguel extended his streak to 43 games with two hits. Lindemann, meanwhile, went 0-for-3 but walked twice to run his streak to 39 games.

THE LAST SHALL BE FIRST… The bottom third of the Otter lineup continues to make its presence felt. Dominic Felice, Kyle Guerra and Jacob Dressler finished Friday's win a combined 5-for-10 with a pair of doubles, a run and two RBI. Through two games of the regional the triumvirate is 11-for-21 (.524) with four doubles, a triple, seven runs scored and eight RBI.

"K"AIDAN… In his best outing of the season, Aidan Lee was a force in Friday's win over Cal Poly Pomona. Lee fanned a career–high six and allowed just two hits — one an infield single — in 3 1/3 innings.

EXTRA BASE HITS… DOUBLES: JJ Engman (15), Kyle Guerra (18), Dominic Felice (12). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Nico Hartojo (11), Cole Murchison (4).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters advance to Championship Saturday against Cal Poly Pomona with a first pitch scheduled for noon. The Otters need just one win in two potential games to advance to next week's NCAA Super Regional.
