Otters Win A Wild One To Advance To Super Regional

CSUMB rallies from 9-2 deficit, scores five in the bottom of the ninth to walk off Pomona, 13-12

SEASIDE, Calif. — Hans Solo famously said in Star Wars, "Never tell me the odds." The No. 9 ranked Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team has lived by that mantra in the postseason, posting its second wild comeback from near impossible odds in seven days to advance to the NCAA Division II Super Regional with a walk-off, 13–12 win over Cal Poly Pomona Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB (39–16) advances to the Super Regional for the first time, where it will host Cal State San Bernardino May 26–27 for the right to advance to the NCAA Division II World Series.

The Otters scored nine runs over the final two innings to overcome five Cal Poly home runs and a one-time 9–2 deficit. Trailing by four runs entering the bottom of the ninth, with the bottom third of the order due up, the Otter offense found a way.

A leadoff double by catcher Dominic Felice (San Benito HS/MPC) lit the fuse. A hustling infield single by No. 9 hitter Jacob Dressler (San Jose/West Valley College) plated Felice and set the table for the top of the lineup.

Nico Hartojo's (Arvada, Colo./MPC) bases-loaded single cut the deficit to 12–10 before Drew Williams (San Benito HS/Cabrillo College) capped a 6–RBI day with a 2–run double to deep left to tie the game.

With only one out, Pomona elected to intentionally walk JJ Engman (Renton, Wash./Shoreline College) to load the bases set up a force at any base, but Cole Murchison (Toronto, Ont./West Valley College) drew a 5–pitch walk to bring Hartojo home with the game–winner.

Saturday's game marked the second time in a week that the Otters rallied from a big deficit to win. Last Saturday, the Otters dug themselves out of an 8–0 hole to beat Cal State San Bernardino in the CCAA Tournament Championship game.

In addition to the ninth inning heroics, Williams collected three hits, including a 3–run homer in the eighth inning. Engman hit his sixth homer of the season, a solo shot that went back-to-back with Williams in the eighth. Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) collected three hits, including an RBI double.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Cole Murchison drew a bases-loaded walk-off walk to bring home Nico Hartojo with the winning run.

WHERE NO OTTER HAS GONE BEFORE… The Otters are advancing to the NCAA Super Regional for the first time in program history.

ONE WIN AWAY… With Saturday's 13–12 win over Cal Poly Pomona, the Otters tied the program record for most wins in a season at 39 (2013, 2018). They need one more to reach 40 for the first time.

THE STREAKS GO ON… Brady Miguel and Chase Lindemann kept their impressive streaks of reaching base going in Saturday's win over Cal Poly Pomona. Miguel extended his streak to 44 games with three hits and a walk. Lindemann, meanwhile, went 2-for-4 with a pair of walks to run his streak to 40 games.

THE LAST SHALL BE FIRST… The bottom third of the Otter lineup continues to make its presence felt. Dominic Felice, Kyle Guerra and Jacob Dressler finished Saturday's win a combined 5-for-13 with a pair of doubles, three runs and an RBI. The triumvirate concluded West Regional play 16-for-34 (.471) with six doubles, a triple, 10 runs scored and nine RBI.

OTTERS ON THE RUN… With 13 runs in Saturday's win over Cal Poly Pomona, the Otters broke the school record for runs in a season with 441. The previous mark was 439 set during the 2018 campaign.

HOME RUN KINGS… With two dingers in Saturday's 13–12 win over Cal Poly Pomona, the Otters tied the program record for most home runs in a season with 57. The 2018 team also hit 57 home runs.

WILLIAMS IS THE RBI KING… With six RBI in Saturday's 13–12 win over Cal Poly Pomona, Drew Williams now stands alone atop CSUMB single–season RBI mountain with 73 so far in 2023. FYI, his ninth inning double increased his Otter record in that category to 22.

EXTRA BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Brady Miguel (16), Drew Williams (22), Cole Murchison (17), Dominic Felice (13), Kyle Guerra (19). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Drew Williams (13), JJ Engman (6).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will host Cal State San Bernardino in a best-of-3 NCAA Super Regional Friday–Saturday (May 26–27) at the Otter Sports Complex.
