Walks In The Park Win Regional Opener

Otters walk a school-record 16 times in 11-8 win over Point Loma

SEASIDE, Calif. — No. 9 Cal State Monterey Bay set a school record, drawing 16 walks to oust defending national runner-up Point Loma Nazarene from the NCAA Division II West Regional with an 11–8 win Thursday at the Otter Sports Complex.

The win lifts CSUMB (37–16) into a best 2-of-3 series with Cal Poly Pomona (29–21) for the right to advance to next week's NCAA Super Regional. Pomona defeated Point Loma 5–4 in Thursday early game.

PLNU's season ends at 36–16.

The Otters and Sea Lions traded leads three times before Jacob Dressler's (San Jose/West Valley College) sac fly in the fifth inning plated Cole Murchison (Toronto, Ont./West Valley College) to break a 4–4 tie. A 2–run double by Dressler and RBI knocks from Dominic Felice (San Benito HS/MPC) and Chase Lindemann (Santa Clarita/Hartnell College) expanded CSUMB's advantage to 9–4 in the sixth.

An RBI grand slam by Point Loma Jack Malone got the Sea Lions back within a run in the seventh, making for some tense moments. But closer Chris Tonna (Fremont/Chabot College) slammed the door shut, striking out five of the six batters he faced in two innings of perfect relief.

Junior Nate Rohlicek (Gilbert, Ariz./Univ. of Nevada) went 6 2/3 innings to earn the win and improve to 8–0. Tonna's save was his ninth.

THE GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Chris Tonna entered the game in the eighth inning. Point Loma didn't sniff a base runner against the senior closer.

SURVIVE AND ADVANCE… The Otters advance to the best 2-of-3 for the West Regional title for the second consecutive season. Last season at Azusa Pacific, APU came back to beat the Otter twice on the final day to advance to the Super Regional.

A WALK IN THE PARK… The Otters drew 16 walks in Thursday' 11–8 win over Point Loma Nazarene, breaking the school record of 14 set in a 9–8 loss to Hillsdale College on Mar. 22, 2011.

THE STREAKS GO ON… Brady Miguel and Chase Lindemann kept their impressive streaks of reach base going in Thursday's win over Point Loma Nazarene. Miguel extended his streak to 42 games with three walks and a hit-by-pitch. Lindemann, meanwhile, went 2-for-3 with three walks to run his streak to 38 games.

MIGUEL'S HITTING STREAK ENDS… Although he reached base four times in Thursday's win over Point Loma Nazarene, Brady Miguel saw his team season–best hitting streak end at 17 games by going 0-for-2.

THE LAST SHALL BE FIRST…  Although the top six batters in the Otter lineup collected just three hits (Fair Point: They combined to reach base 17 times), the last third of the lineup came through in spades. Dominic Felice, Kyle Guerra and Jacob Dressler finished Thursday's win a combined 6-for-11 with two doubles, a triple, six runs scored and six RBI. Dressler led that triumvirate with two hits and a career–high five RBI.

TONNA SAVES THE DAY… By recording his ninth save in Thursday's 11–8 win over Point Loma Nazarene, Chris Tonna claimed sole possession of second place on the Otter single-season saves list. He needs one more save to match the school record of 10 set by A.J. Quintero (2013) and Connor Fabing (2018).

TONNA SAVES THE DAY, CAREER EDITION… Chris Tonna earned his 15th career save in Thursday's 11–8 win over Point Loma Nazarene. That leaves him one behind Kyle Narahara's (2016–17) career record of 16.

EXTRA BASE HITS… DOUBLES: JJ Engman (14), Kyle Guerra (17), Jacob Dressler (2). TRIPLES: Dominic Felice (1). HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will open their best 2-of-3 series against Cal Poly Pomona for the West Region crown with a single game Friday at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
