Otters Advance To CCAA Championship Game

CSUMB downs San Bernardino 4-3, will play for the title Saturday at noon

SEASIDE, Calif. — No. 12 Cal State Monterey Bay earned a thrilling 4–3 win over No. 21 Cal State San Bernardino Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex to earn a berth in Saturday's California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament Championship game.

CSUMB improves to 35–15 overall. The Otters will play the winner of Friday's late game between San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona for the title Saturday at noon. That team will have to beat CSUMB twice while the Otters need just one win in the double elimination tournament to claim the crown.

Friday's was a game befitting the top two ranked teams in the West Region. Both teams used high quality pitching and defense to stay in the hunt.

The Otter offense drew first blood early with great execution, jumping to a 1–0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to a walk, a balk, a fly out and a ground out. Chase Lindemann (Santa Clarita/Hartnell College) drew the walk and Nico Hartojo (Arvada, Colo./MPC) drove in the first of two runs in the game with a 1–out grounder to third.

San Bernardino rallied to take its only lead in the fifth when Derek Bogh and Deshawn Johnson hit solo shots to put the Coyotes on top 2–1. But the Otters responded in the home half of the inning when a Drew Williams (San Benito HS) triple plated Lindemann and Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS) to put the Otters back in front.

Hartojo followed with a single to drive in Williams with the final Otter run.

From there, the Otter bullpen took control. Ryan Io (San Benito HS), Colby Harrison (Chico/Pleasant Valley HS) and Chris Tonna (Fremont/Chabot College) combined for four innings of 2–hit relief to close the door.

Nate Rohlicek (Gilbert, Ariz./Chandler HS) fanned seven over five innings to improve to 7–0. Tonna threw a perfect ninth to earn his eighth save.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Cole Murchison made a fine over-the-shoulder catch on a pop foul off the bat of Deshawn Johnson for the final out.

FOR ALL THE MARBLES… Although entering the week as the top ranked team in the West Region makes CSUMB a virtual lock to advance to the NCAA Tournament, a win Saturday would earn the CCAA's automatic bid.

WILL THE SECOND TIME BE A CHARM? Despite winning four outright CCAA titles (2013, '18, '22, '23), and a CCAA North Division crown (2016), CSUMB will be playing in the CCAA Tournament Championship Game for just the second time. The last time the Otters made it, they dropped a 4–2 decision to Cal Poly Pomona in 2019.

HERE HE COMES TO SAVE THE DAY… Chris Tonna earned his eighth save of the season in Friday's 4–3 win over Cal State San Bernardino. That is tied for the No. 3 spot on the CSUMB single–season saves list. The only Otters to post more were A.J. Quintero (2013) and Connor Fabing (2018), who share the school record with 10.

TWO MORE FOR THE RECORD… Chris Tonna earned the 14th save of his collegiate career in Friday's 4–3 win over Cal State San Bernardino. He needs two more to match the Otter career record of 16 set by Kyle Narahara (2016–17).

EXTRA BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Cole Murchison (14), Kyle Guerra (15). TRIPLES: Drew Williams (2). HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will play the winner of Friday's late game between Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona for the CCAA Championship Saturday at noon.
