Otters Win A Championship Game For The Ages

CSUMB rallies from 8-0 deficit to win title game, 13-9

SEASIDE, Calif. — No. 12 Cal State Monterey Bay outlasted No. 21 Cal State San Bernardino on a CCAA Tournament Championship Saturday worthy of a heavyweight title fight to claim its first ever CCAA Tournament crown at the Otter Sports Complex.

San Bernardino rallied from five runs down in the eighth inning to walk-off Game 1, 16–15. But the Otters got off the canvas in the deciding game, rallying from an 8–0 deficit to win 13–9.

With the victory, CSUMB (36–16) earns the CCAA's automatic bid to next week's NCAA West Regional. San Bernardino (38–17) is a lock to advance to the NCAA Regional as well.

With 53 total runs scored, there were gaudy offensive numbers to be sure. But the big story for Otter fans was the bullpen work of sophomore lefty Ryan Sleeman (San Jose/West Valley College), who came on with the Otters down 8–0 and silenced the potent Coyote bats, allowing just one run while striking out six in 6 1/3 innings to earn his second win of 2023.

Junior right fielder JJ Engman (Renton, Wash./O'Dea HS) played the role of offensive hero, blasting a no-doubt, 3-run homer to left in the seventh inning to give CSUMB its first lead of the game at 10–9. Engman added a two run single in the eighth to close the Otter scoreline.

Sophomore catcher Dominic Felice (Hollister/Monte Vista Christian) led CSUMB's 37-hit day with six hits, including an Otter record-tying five hits in the opener. Tournament MVP Drew Williams (San Benito HS) had five hits, scored three runs and drove in five.

Engman and Chase Lindemann (Santa Clarita/Hartnell College) each had four hits, including a home run. Engman scored four runs and drove home seven while Lindemann scored five times with four RBI.

Robbie Treto (Arelta/L.A. Pierce College) and Bailey Bordas (Rancho Cucamonga/Los Osos HS) added home runs.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… San Bernardino's Deshawn Johnson's walk-off single plated Derek Bogh in the ninth.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… JJ Engman's 2–run single off All–CCAA closer Oscar Rauda extended the Otter lead to 13–9 in the bottom of the eighth.

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS… History has proven that winning the CCAA Tournament title is more difficult than winning the regular season championship. The Otters are the first team to wear both the CCAA regular season and CCAA Tournament crowns since Chico State in 2017.  Although the Otters own four outright CCAA titles (2013, '18, '22, '23), and a CCAA North Division crown (2016), CSUMB claimed its first CCAA Tournament title.

ALL–TOURNAMENT TIME… As befitting the tournament champion, CSUMB was well represented on the all–tournament team. Drew Williams led the way as tournament MVP. Other Otters honored were Chase Lindemann, Nate Rohlicek, JJ Engman, Ryan Sleeman and Cole Murchison.

WILLIAMS DRIVES HOME HIS POINT… With five RBI in Saturday's doubleheader, Drew Williams tied the CSUMB single season RBI record of 67. Jason Ajamian set the mark in 2022.

FELICE IS A HIT… Dominic Felice went 5-for-6 in Saturday's opener to tie the CSUMB record for hits in a game. He is the ninth different Otter to turn the trick and the third current Otter to do it. Brady Miguel did it against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Apr. 22 and Chase Lindemann did it against Azusa Pacific in 2022.

GAME 1 EXTRA BASE HITS… DOUBLES: JJ Engman (13), Dominic Felice (11), Cole Murchison (15). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Chase Lindemann (3), Robbie Treto (6).

GAME 2 EXTRA BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Cole Murchison (16), Kyle Guerra (16). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: JJ Engman (5), Bailey Bordas (2).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will await announcement of the NCAA Tournament Field. The selection show will be Sunday at 5 p.m. (PDT). Links will be available at NCAA.com.
