Otters Open CCAA Tournament Play With Win

Drew Williams sets school doubles record as Otters advance

TOURNAMENT CENTRAL

SEASIDE, Calif. — No. 12 Cal State Monterey Bay opened CCAA Tournament action with a convincing 9–3 win over Stanislaus State Thursday morning at the Otter Sports Complex.

With the win, CSUMB (34–15 overall) advances in the winner's bracket, where it will face Cal State San Bernardino Friday at noon. San Bernardino advanced with a 10–6 win in 10 innings over Cal Poly Pomona Thursday afternoon.

Second baseman Drew Williams (San Benito HS/San Jose State) broke a 2–2 tie with a 2–run double in the fifth inning. The Otters put the game away with a 5–run seventh inning that included RBI knocks from Cole Murchison (Toronto, Ont./West Valley College), Dominic Felice (Monte Vista Christian/MPC) and Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS).

Sophomore Mitchell Torres (Valencia HS/Mesa CC) got the start and allowed three runs on four hits over five innings to improve to 6–1. Colby Harrison (Chico/Pleasant Valley HS) led a strong bullpen effort with three strikeouts in two shutout innings of 1–hit relief. Chris Tonna (Fremont/Chabot College) and Michael Potter (Elk Grove/Sheldon HS) each added a frame of scoreless relief.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Chase Lindemann's sac fly plated Kyle Guerra to cap a 5–run seventh and give the Otters a 9–3 lead.

FOR (TOURNAMENT) OPENERS… The Otters improved to 4–4 in CCAA Tournament openers since making their first appearance after winning the CCAA title in 2013. CSUMB is 9–14 all–time in CCAA Tournament play.

WHERE THE ROAD LEADS… The Otters will play Cal State San Bernardino in a winner's bracket game Friday at noon. The winner of that game will advance to the championship game on Saturday. The loser will play the winner of Thursday night's Cal Poly Pomona/Stanislaus State game Friday at 3:30 for the right to advance to championship Saturday.

DOUBLE DREW FOR THE RECORD… Drew Williams's 2–run double in the fifth inning was his 21st of the season, giving him sole possession of the CSUMB single–season record. He entered the week tied with Daniel Gomez (2007), Collin Nelson (2011) and Mark Hurley (2014) at 20.

THEY KEEP DOUBLING UP… In addition to Drew Williams's record–setting double, JJ Engman and Nico Hartojo also doubled in the win over Stanislaus State, increasing the Otter team season record to 125. Pending other action Thursday, the Otters rank No. 9 nationally in doubles.

EXTRA BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Drew Williams (21), JJ Engman (12), Nico Hartojo (8). TRIPLES: JJ Engman (2). HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will play Cal State San Bernardino in a winner's bracket game Friday at noon.
